Purdue Tries To Avoid 3-Game Skid
Michigan leads the Big Ten at 12-2 in league play, while Michigan State is second at 11-3 and Purdue third at 11-4. To win the regular-season crown, the Wolverines are -150 favorites on the NCAAB futures odds with the Spartans +330 and Boilermakers +700. Michigan and Purdue split their two meetings, while U-M and MSU face off for the first time this Friday and then again on March 9.
Last season, Purdue was 2-0 vs. Michigan State but one game was in West Lafayette and the other from Minneapolis in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. That Boilers team also was better than this one and had National Player of the Year Zach Edey, who is now in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Boilermakers have won nine of their last 10 games with Michigan State. A win will give Purdue a six-game winning streak over the Spartans for the first time since 1993 to 1997. Tuesday marks the first time that both teams have been nationally-ranked since Feb. 10, 2018, when the No. 4 Spartans topped No. 3 Purdue, 68-65. The MSU win denied Purdue a share of the Big Ten title.

Purdue Tries To Avoid 3-Game Skid
Purdue (19-7, 11-4 Big Ten) is on its second two-game losing streak of the season and hasn’t lost three in a row in a few years. It was upset 94-84 by No. 16 Wisconsin on Saturday as a 6.5-point home favorite. The Badgers’ John Tonje scored 22 of his 32 points in the second half — Tonje scored 10 straight points during a key second-half stretch that gave Wisconsin a lead it never relinquished. UW made 18 of 25 shots and 6 of 12 3s without turning the ball over in the second half.
Purdue coach Matt Painter, praised Wisconsin’s maturity and toughness, acknowledging their superior performance in those areas. UW’s offensive efficiency, particularly their impressive two-point shooting, proved too much for Purdue to handle. The 94 points allowed were the most allowed in Mackey Arena since Jan. 30, 2013, when No. 3 Indiana scored 97. Purdue’s 10-point loss was its largest in Mackey Arena since Jan. 22, 2021 vs. No. 7 Michigan. Purdue also saw a 30-game winning streak end when scoring 80 or more points.
“You just move to the next game, whether you win or you lose,” Painter said. “Obviously, you want to take care of your home court and we didn’t do that today. We’ve had a couple losses now at home. You have to regroup, you have to be better. A lot of times what it gets to is just being better at what you do. When you out-rebound somebody and you have 21 assists and have four turnovers, you’re putting yourself in a pretty good spot. When you don’t turn the other team over at all and you only out-rebound them by two, you’re even there. So, now who’s going to shoot the basketball better?”

We saw Big Ten history on Saturday when Michigan State (20-5, 11-3) was a 79-65 upset winner at Illinois as a 6.5-point underdog as Spartans Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo moved past late Indiana coach Bobby Knight with his Big Ten record 354th conference victory. MSU trailed by as many as 16 in the first half but outscored Illinois 42-24 in the second half and finished with a 15-point run as the Illini missed their last 18 shots over the final 8 1/2 minutes.
Jaxon Kohler scored a career-high 23 points, including a critical 3-pointer with the shot clock about to expire with 46.6 seconds to play, and grabbed 10 rebounds as Michigan State Controlled the boards late.
MSU entered having lost three of four because of poor 3-point shooting: 14 of 60 for 23% from distance in those three losses. On Saturday, the Spartans were 5-for-12 from deep and won the game by taking the ball inside, scoring 40 points in the paint.
“I just want to be thankful for the 148 players I coached,” Izzo said after. “Each one of them got a win, and those wins helped me and the presidents, the ADs, my assistant coaches and over 6 million fans that watch this over those 354 wins.”
Knight was 353-151 (.700) in Big Ten games in his 29 seasons in Indiana, and 662-239 (.735) overall. Izzo is 354-173 (.672) in Big Ten games in his 30th season with the Spartans, and 727-300 (.708) overall. Since becoming head coach of Michigan State in 1995, Izzo has led his team to 26 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the longest active streak in the nation, and that will extend to 27 this season.

Since the calendar flipped to 2025, Purdue ranks 4th in efficiency (behind Houston, Auburn, Duke). Purdue is fourth in offensive efficiency (128.0) and 16th in defensive efficiency (94.5). This will mark the 10th game this season against a ranked team. Since the start of last season, Purdue is 14-6 against nationally-ranked teams.
In its win Saturday, Michigan State outshot Illinois (48.5% to 38.1%) and is 19-1 when shooting better than their opponent. MSU outrebounded its opponent for the 22nd time this season and has an 18-4 record in those situations. The Spartans are now 12-0 when committing fewer turnovers than their opponent (MSU 7, Illinois 11). They are 19-0 when scoring at least 70 points. MSU 72, Purdue 71.

Why Bet On Purdue
The Boilermakers have dropped two straight and three of its last four games including a humbling 66-58 road loss against No. 12 Illinois on Saturday. Purdue had their Tuesday home date against Nebraska postponed due to coronavirus issues within the Cornhuskers program.
Brandon Newman and Trevion Williams tied for a team-high 14 points, but no other player managed to reach double figures in scoring in the loss. Purdue trailed by 10 at the break and could never get over the hump in the second half while shooting a tepid 39.0 percent from the field. Purdue had 14 turnovers in the loss.
“Just overall execution,” coach Matt Painter said. “We have good stretches in the game, and then we have bad stretches. We need to replace our bad stretches with average stretches.”
Painter is trying to teach his team about having quality possessions every time down the floor.
“We just go into the tank a little bit when you miss a shot or turn the ball over a couple times,” Painter said. “It`’s just the awareness of, ‘Hey, we have to have a good possession here.’ We just don’t have that.”
The Boilermakers have gone a winless 0-4 on the road this season.
Why Bet On No. 23 Michigan State
The Spartans have won two straight after losing their first three Big Ten conference battles this season. Michigan State jumped all over No. 15 Rutgers on Tuesday night to get a commanding 68-45 home win as a slight, 3-point favorite. Junior forward Aaron Henry scored a team-high 20 points while adding eight rebounds in the win, one game after posting a career-high 27 points against Nebraska one game prior.
“We’ll all marvel at his 20 points, (but) the last two games, he’s been unbelievable defensively,” coach Tom Izzo said. “He got into some people (Tuesday), he knocked some balls loose, it’s just his whole demeanor right now. He’s even more coachable, not that he hasn’t been this year. He’s just doing the things he needs to do to become a great player, and he’s got a ways to go, but I think that starts it.”
Joshua Langford and Rocket Watts each added 11 points in the win while Joey Hauser pulled down 14 rebounds and hipped in nine points.
“I feel like it’s important for the leaders, Josh (Langford), Frosty (Foster Loyer) and myself having been here so long and having gone through ups and downs throughout seasons to understand,” Henry said.
The Spartans have gone a near-perfect 6-1 at home this season.

Expert Analysis and Prediction
There’s no other way for me to say it. I believe Purdue is facing Michigan State at a bad time right now. The Boilermakers are struggling to score, having been limited to 58 points or less in two of their last three losses. Combine that with the fact that Michigan State has recorded a pair of confidence-boosting wins in their last two games and it’s easy to see why I like the Spartans to win and cover the spread as home favorite of somewhere between 5 and 8 points.
The Boilermakers are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six road games 0-3-1 ATS in their last four games and 0-7-2 ATS in their last 9 games games against a team with a winning straight up record.
