PGA Tour 2022 Open Championship Betting Update: LIV Golfers Allowed to Play

PGA Tour 2022 Open Championship Betting Update: LIV Golfers Allowed to Play

As crazy as it sounds, the final major of the 2022 season is just over two weeks away as the world’s top players prepare for The 150th Open Championship at the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews. The tournament begins on Thursday, July 14th, and runs through Sunday, July 17th. The Old Course at St. Andrews hosts the tournament for the 30th time.

Collin Morikawa came across the pond and added his second major title to his resume with a two-shot victory over Jordan Spieth in his Open Championship debut. Louis Oosthuizen and Jon Rahm tied for third, while Dylan Frittelli rounded out the top five.

With under a month to go before players tee it up, let’s dive into the recent news regarding the field and updated Open Championship Odds as we inch closer to the season’s final major tournament.

The Open Championship: Early Rumors, Updated Field, Betting Odds

LIV Golfers will be Allowed to Compete

It was announced late last week that the tournament organizers would allow golfers who have deflected to the LIV Golf Series to participate in this year’s Open Championship. R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers stated that golf’s original championship would allow those competitors who are exempt or earned a spot through qualifying for the event.

This is no surprise as the USGA made a similar statement before the 2022 US Open held a few weeks ago in Brookline. While players are exempt this year, changes could be made before the 2023 major championship season that does not allow these defectors to participate.

Tiger Woods’ Anticipated Return

The 15-major champion skipped the US Open at The Country Club to focus on his health and preparation for the Open Championship at St. Andrews. The tournament and venue mean a lot to Tiger as he’s won a pair of Claret Jugs at the course.

All signs point to a return for Woods, who is scheduled to participate in the JP McManus Pro-Am at Adare Manor leading up to the championship. Photos of Woods no longer wearing the sleeve on his surgically-repaired right leg and shots have leaked.

Woods made the cut at the Masters and PGA Championship in his two appearances this season. Woods finished 47th at Augusta and had to withdraw from the PGA Championship following the third round.

McIlroy on Top

Rory McIlroy is the betting favorite at +820 in the updated odds over at MyBookie.ag. McIlroy has a pair of victories this season (CJ Cup and Canadian Open) to go along with three top-8 finishes or better at the three majors. The 33-year-old and four-time major winner hoisted the Claret Jug for the only time in 2014.

Behind McIlroy is Jon Rahm (+1020), as the Spaniard aims to capture his second career major victory. Rahm, who won the Mexico Open this season, has finished T11 and T3 in his last two tries at the Open.

Rounding out the top 5 is Masters champion Scottie Scheffler (+1200), PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas (+1375), and defending champion Morikawa (+1675). US Open winner Matthew Fitzpatrick has climbed the odds boards and sits just outside the top-5 at +1850.

MyBookie’s software and lines are in line with other books, but they really stand out with the promotions. They are more frequent and offer better deals than their competitors. I’ll never go back to another book.

I have had a great experience with this site. Deposit and payout methods are fairly easy. Betting is pretty self explanatory as well. Anytime I’ve had any issues (and I’ve had a few due ti my own ignorance at times) customer service has been wonderful and extremely helpful.
