Detroit Tigers 2024 MLB Season Rundown, Odds

The Detroit Tigers haven’t won the World Series since 1984 or made the playoffs since 2014. They aren’t winning this year’s Fall Classic but could return to the postseason with the right breaks and if ownership is willing to add at the trade deadline. Let’s break down the 2024 Tigers to consider in your MLB betting plans.

Detroit Tigers Odds to Win

Regular-season wins: O/U 80.5
To make playoffs: No -225, Yes +190
To win AL Central: +350
To win AL pennant: +2500
To win World Series: +6000

It is a new era in Detroit as the Tigers begin life without former AL MVP and Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera, who retired. He finished his career slashing .306/.382/.518 with 627 doubles, 17 triples, 511 home runs and 1,881 RBI in 2,797 games. Cabrera is one of three players in MLB history to finish his career with at least 3,000 hits, 500 homers and 600 doubles, joining Hank Aaron and Albert Pujols. Cabrera will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

@ Phillies – L 4-1

The good news about the team’s 78-84 record last year was that Detroit played much better in the second half of the season to carry some momentum into 2024 and it was the club’s most victories since 2016, which is the last time the Tigers had a winning record. If they don’t at least contend for a playoff spot this year, Manager AJ Hinch surely will not be back in 2025.

The Tigers were dominant against American League Central teams in 2023, finishing the year 35-17 in divisional play. It marked the first time the Tigers have had a winning record against AL Central teams since 2016 and was the club’s second-best record. Detroit won the season series against all AL Central teams for the first time since 2011 and went 13-2-1 in its 16 series against divisional teams.

Detroit finished 2023 with a 41-40 road record overall, the club’s first season above .500 on the road since 2016 (41- 40). From July 1 to the end of season, Detroit posted a 24-15 record away from Comerica Park, which was the sixth-best road record in that span.

Last year at the Trade Deadline, the Tigers tried to trade one of their best pitchers in lefty Eduardo Rodriguez to the LA Dodgers, but E-Rod invoked his no-trade clause. Detroit wanted to get something for him knowing that Rodriguez would opt-out of his contract after 2023 and hit free agency. He did and signed with Arizona.

Following injury setbacks that prevented him from fulfilling what many saw as great potential while with the Red Sox, Rodriguez finally put it all together in 2023 with the Tigers, posting a 3.30 ERA over 26 starts (152 2/3 innings). Rodriguez’s strikeout rate (23%) was up in 2023, and his walk rate (7.7%) was down.

But the Tigers still have one of the AL’s better lefties in Tarik Skubal, who already has been named the Opening Day starter – his first Opening Day outing. Skubal spent Opening Day with the Tigers last year as an observer, still rehabbing from left elbow flexor tendon surgery. He didn’t debut until July in the majors but finished with a flourish, allowing a lone run on nine hits over 23 innings with two walks and 36 strikeouts over his final four starts. He won American League Pitcher of the Month honors for September.

Detroit also added to the rotation in free agency with the additions of Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty. Though Maeda suffered a sub-.500 record for the second time in his seven-year MLB career in 2023, he allowed 94 hits over 104 1/3 innings with 28 walks and 117 strikeouts. His rates of 2.4 walks and 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings were better than his career averages and ranked among the top quarter of MLB pitchers.

Flaherty was 7-6 with a 4.43 ERA in 20 starts for the Cardinals last year before being traded to the Orioles at the Aug. 1 Deadline. He threw six innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts in his O’s debut on Aug. 3, but struggled the rest of the way, eventually closing the season in Baltimore’s bullpen.

Lineup-wise, the team has two promising power guys in former No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson and Jake Rogers. Torkelson had 31 homers, the most by a Tigers hitter since Cabrera (38) and Justin Upton (31) in 2016. He became the first player in franchise history to have 30-or-more doubles, 30-or-more homers and 90-or-more RBI in his age-23 season. From June 27 until the end of the season, Torkelson was tied for the AL lead and ranked tied for sixth in the majors with 23 homers, while he was third in the AL with 60 RBI and tied for fifth with 41 extra-base hits.

Rogers had 21 homers, which ranked fifth among American League catchers. He became the seventh player in franchise history to hit 20-or-more homers in a season while playing at least 50 percent of his games at catcher.

2020 Detroit Tigers Pre-Season Analysis

Detroit Tigers 2020 Pre-Season Analysis

It’s going to be another very long baseball season in Detroit – assuming there is one – as the Tigers remain in full-blown rebuild mode, although there is some good young talent on the way. Here’s a look at what to expect from the 2020 Tigers. Let’s check the MLB Odds and World Series Odds for the Detroit Tigers 2020 Season.

Detroit Tigers Offensive Analysis

The best-known Detroit Tigers hitter remains future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera, but the guy who won the Triple Crown and was a two-time AL MVP is long gone now. Cabrera hit .281 last year, but he hit just 12 homers with a .744 OPS for the Tigers as a 36-year-old. Cabrera turns 37 in 2020 and is due $124 million over the next four seasons. The Tigers are trying to keep Cabrera healthy and productive by encouraging weight loss to reduce the pressure on his troublesome knee.

“Last year I was heavy,” he said. “I think I lost a lot of weight from last year to this year. I tried to eat more vegetables, cut out some extra stuff. I ate almost the same, but less carbohydrates.”

Cabrera will start his 18th major league season with the highest batting average (.315) among active players with a minimum of 1,000 plate appearances. He also ranks second in RBIs (1,694) and second in home runs with 477, although only 31 of those homers came in the last three seasons.

The Tigers have seven of nine spots locked up in the starting batting order, assuming everyone is health for the regular season. The team added second baseman Jonathan Schoop in free agency. Schoop, 28, signed a one-year, $6.1 million free agent deal with Detroit in December and will try to build on the bounce-back .777 OPS and 23 home runs he posted in 121 games last season with the Twins.

First basemen CJ Cron and catcher Austin Romine also were added. Cron was non-tendered by the Rays after the 2018 season despite hitting well, then was non-tendered by the Twins after hitting well in 2019. He will serve as the Tigers’ starting first baseman in 2020. Last year with the Twins he batted .253/.311/.469 with 25 home runs and 78 RBI.

Romine is in line to receive regular starts behind the dish for the Tigers, so he should easily cruise past his current career high of 265 plate appearances. The 31-year-old is only a career .239/.281/.366 hitter over parts of eight major league seasons.

Detroit Tigers Pitching Analysis

The delay of the season will be a good thing for former AL Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer. He missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery. Fulmer went 11-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 2016, his debut season in the majors in winning Rookie of the Year.

He was fairly solid again the following year, but since then, he’s had one problem after another. Oblique and knee injuries limited Fulmer in 2018, when his ERA rose to 4.69. He was hoping he had put those issues in the past at spring training last year, but he ended up facing an even longer recovery after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Spencer Turnbull led the majors with 17 losses in 2019 but actually wasn’t that bad. The 27-year-old right-hander finished with a rough 3-17 record, 4.61 ERA, and 1.44 WHIP in 148 1/3 total innings.

The team added Ivan Nova in free agency. The veteran right-hander posted a 4.72 ERA last season for the White Sox, but he made 34 starts and should at least provide the Tigers with someone who can eat innings.

Former No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize should be up in the majors at some point this year. Mize threw 109 innings between Class A (advanced) Lakeland and Double-A Erie in 2019, but was shut down early after experiencing a shoulder flare-up earlier in the summer.

Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire confirmed Tuesday that Joe Jimenez will be his closer this season.

That has been the presumption after Jimenez ended last season in the role. Gardy also said that Buck Farmer will be the primary setup man for Jimenez and that he will “build it backwards from there” as far as the rest of his bullpen goes. Jimenez can be erratic at times, but he has wipeout stuff when he’s on.
