Top 10 Upsets in French Open History

2017 Jelena Ostapenko Over Simona Halep

3-seed Simona Halep was a massive favorite over unseeded Jelena Ostapenko. Ostapenko got the victory and became the first unseeded player to win a WTA French Open title. Halep came back in 2018 to secure her French Open trophy.

2017 Ekaterina Makarova Over Angelique Kerber

In 2016, Kerber was on top of the world, winning two grand slam titles. But in 2017, she came crashing down becoming the first 1-seed in French Open history to lose in the first round. Ekaterina Makarova beat Kerber 6-2, 6-2.

1997 Gustavo Kuerten Wins the Title

Kuerten beat 5-seed Thomas Muster, defending champ Yevgeny Kafelnikov, and two-time champ Sergi Bruguera on his way to the French Open title. Kuerten was unseeded, ranked 66th in the world, and the first Brazilian to win the title.

1993 Stephane Huet Against Ivan Lendl

Losing to Huet was one of the reasons the great Ivan Lendl decided to retire in 1994. Lendl was the 7-seed and on the tail end of his career, but Huet had to qualify for the French Open, entered the tournament, ranked 297th in the world, and was a massive underdog in the first round match.

1983 Kathy Horvath over Martina Navratilova

Martina Navratilova was 86-1 in singles matches heading into the French Open. In the fourth round, Navratilova fell to Kathy Horvath, a 17 year old American. It was an amazing upset. Even more amazing because Horvath lost to an unseeded player 6-1, 6-1 in the next round.

1996 Chris Woodruff against Andre Agassi

Woodruff, the world’s 72nd ranked player, upset Andre Agassi, the 3-seed, in the second round. Woodruff required five sets to get it done. But he got it done. Agassi committed 63 unforced errors during the match. So it wasn’t all Woodruff.

1987 Eric Winogradsky Beats Stefan Edberg

Stefan Edberg had a terrific 1987 season. He won the Australian Open and made it to the semifinals of both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. The lone substandard performance came agaisnt Eric Winogradsky, the world’s152nd ranked player, in the second round at the French Open.

1997 Iva Majoli Against Martina Hingis

Martinia Hingis won 4-of-5 Grand Slam titles in 1997 and 1998 and was the world’s youngest number one player in history at the age of 16. But in the French Open Final in 1997, Hingis lost to Iva Majoli. Hingis’s loss was her only over clay or grass in 1997 where she went 71-5.

1989 Michael Chang Against Ivan Lendl

Chang upset Ivan Lendl in the fourth round. The then 17 year old would go on to win the French Open title over Stefan Edberg but it was the victory over Lendl that put Chang on the map.

2009 Rafael Nadal falls to Robin Soderling

Rafael Nadal is called the King of Clay because he’s won over 97% of clay matches. In the previous month Nadal has beaten Soderling 6-1, 6-0 on clay. Rafa was the world’s top ranked player and had won the previous four French Open titles. Somehow, Soderling upset Nadal in the fourth round.

Top Tennis Betting Picks of the Week – May 20th Edition

Previous Betting News

Rafael Nadal, it’s time to take a look at what lies heading the final week before the second grand slam of the season. That’s right tennis fans and enthusiasts, with a pair of final tune-up events going down on both, the men’s ATP World Tour and women’s WTA Tour, it’s time to find some value even though the vast majority of the world’s top-ranked players will be off from action as they recoup for the May 26 start of the 2019 French Open.

Okay, with all of that said, let’s find out who’s in action and where the best tennis betting value lies this coming week.

Top Tennis Betting Picks of the Week – May 20th Edition

Open Parc Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Lyon

Where: Lyon, France

Benoît Paire vs. Mackenzie McDonald

Tuesday, May 21

The 30-year-old Frenchman Benoît Paire is ranked 51st in the world right now, but he’s just 11-12 on the year, although he did manage to win one title by claiming the hardware at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Morocco in April. 24-year-old American, Mackenzie McDonald is ranked 65t in the world right now and he’s gone 10-10 on the year with no titles.

I’m going to get right to the point with my pick on this match by saying that McDonald, who stands a modest 5’10” has no chance to beat Benoît Pair in this match simply because he doesn’t have the power on skill to beat the experienced veteran on a surface he grew up playing on. While these two have never met, I don’t think it’s going to end well for the young Californian.

Tennis Betting Pick: Benoît Paire in Straight Sets

Felix Auger Aliassime vs. John Millman

Gifted 18-year-old Canadian phenom Felix Auger Aliassime is a transcendent talent that is ranked a stellar 28th in the world and is on the rise right now. He’s an impressive 17-11 on the year with no titles and he’s never faced 29-year-old Australian John Millman before. For his part, Millman, is a modest 10-13 on the year with no titles.

While both of these players went out in the first round in Rome and the second round just prior to that in Madrid, FA2 is the bigger, faster and more explosive player in this pairing and that’s why John Millman is going to be his latest in a season that has seen him beat some pretty big names like Fabio Fognini, Pable Cuevas (twice) Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Borna Coric among others.

Tennis Betting Pick: Felix Auger Aliassime in Three Sets

Internationaux de Strasbourg

When: May 19 – May 25
Where: Strasbourg, France

On Tuesday, May 21st, the top-seeded Ashleigh Barty is a stellar 24-5 on the year with one title while Daria Gavrilova has struggled mightily in going a miserable 2-11 in 2019. Barty has won two straight against Gavrilova including a dominating 6-1, 6-2 win in Madrid a couple of weeks ago. I know Barty was dispatched in the Round of 16 in Rome but she did reach the quarters in Madrid, not to mention she recorded the biggest win of her career by claiming the coveted title in Miami. Daria Gavrilova enters this event riding a five-match losing streak that has seen her first serve go completely by the wayside. I know Gavrilova has 11 career wins over top-10 players, but she’s not beating the confident-laden World No 9 in this matchup.

Tennis Betting Pick: Ashleigh Barty in Three Sets
