Memphis Basketball Analysis

Memphis (13-3, 3-0 AAC) won its fourth game in a row Saturday, 74-70 over East Carolina. The Tigers failed to hold double-digit leads in both halves, and East Carolina tied the game at 68 after CJ Walker converted a three-point play. But, a pair of free throws by PJ Haggerty and a drive by Tyrese Hunter put Memphis ahead for good. ECU was looking for its first-ever road win over a Top 25 team.

PJ Haggerty

Haggerty led Memphis with 25 points on 7-of-16 shooting, going 10-for-10 from the stripe. Hunter contributed 14 points while also recording four rebounds, two assists, and a block. Dainja had a solid game off the bench, scoring 10 points and going 4-of-7 from the floor. Memphis improved to 3-0 in conference play for the second time under Penny Hardaway (2023-24).

Haggerty recorded his 11th game of 20-plus points this season, including four of his last six. The nation’s leading free throw maker went 10-of-10 at the line, his sixth outing this year with double-digit makes. He is only the second player in Division I this season to score at least 25 points and go perfect at the charity stripe with at least 10 attempts. And he’s the first Tiger to do so since Jeremiah Martin on Feb. 23, 2019 at Wichita State (37pt, 14-14 FT). Hardaway has no fear in going to Haggerty in the clutch.

Penny Hardaway

“It’s easy to give him the basketball because I’ve seen him do it so many times,” Hardaway said. “I trust him for sure that he’s going to make the right play and knock down a tough shot. And he and Tyrese are like best friends, so they kind of work off with one another, which helps us because Tyrese doesn’t get in the funk if PJ’s going and vice versa.”

Haggerty is first in the conference in scoring (22.4), free throws made (120) and minutes per game (36.5), ranks second in steals per game (1.9) and eighth in free throw percentage (83.3).

The Stats

Memphis is among the nation’s top 3-point shooting teams at 40 percent but they average 14.6 turnovers, 325th in the country. They committed 16 on Saturday, costing them 24 points. However, that’s yet to be a major problem because of Memphis’ ability to pour on the points in pressure situations, according to Hardaway: “We’ve got guys that can finish the game.”

The Tigers are looking to start 4-0 in conference play for only the second time in the last 12 seasons. Prior to last season, they had not started 4-0 in league play since 2012-13. Memphis is 8-0 this season when scoring at least 80 points and 5-3 when not.

Temple Basketball Analysis

Temple (10-6, 2-1) was a 73-70 upset winner at Rice on Saturday. An 11-3 run gave Rice a 61-60 lead with 3:26 remaining. But Temple scored eight of the next 10 points to go ahead 68-63 with 23 seconds left. Rice’s Trae Broadnax made a layup, and Quante Berry made one-of-two free throws. Another Broadnax layup cut it to two, and Berry again made one-of-two free throws. Broadnax then hit a three with 1.5 to make it a one-point game. Rice immediately fouled, and Jamal Mashburn, Jr., made both. But, Broadnax’s inbounds pass was intercepted, and Temple held on for the win.

Rice was held to 40.3% (29-of-72) from the field, and 28.6% (6-of-21) from three. Temple shot only 39.3% (22-of-56) from the floor, but connected on 50.0% (6-of-12) from three, and 71.9% (23-of-32) from the free throw line. Rice was also outrebounded, 47-to-37.

Shane Dezonie

Senior Dezonie recorded the third double-double of his Temple career with 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while the transfer Jamal Mashburn Jr. led Temple in scoring with 24 points. Mashburn Jr. recorded his 11th game this season with 20 or more points, and added four rebounds in 37 minutes of action.

Jamal Mashburn Jr.

Mashburn is the team’s star. He’s posting 20.8 points per game, third in the conference, on career highs of about 43.1% from the field and 44.4% from deep. “I’ve always been an aggressive player throughout my career,” Mashburn said. “I’m going to continue to keep doing that and hopefully we keep winning games.”

Lynn Greer III

The team’s guard depth has been solid despite being largely without key transfer portal addition Greer III, who was suspended for the first nine games of the season for violating NCAA rules. Greer averaged less than four points per game when he returned but was suspended again on Jan. 11 and there is no timetable on his return.

The Stats

The Owls have lacked frontcourt size, struggling to defend the rim and rebound against bigger teams. Temple ranks sixth in the conference in rebounds per game and in five of Temple’s six losses, it lost the rebound battle.

Temple is 6-0 at home with an average margin of victory at 12.5 points and looks to match its best start on their home court since the 2018-19 season, when the Owls won their first seven games. Mashburn is averaging 20.7 PPG, 10th in the country. The last Owl to finish a season top-ten in scoring was David Hawkins whose 24.4 ppg ranked him third in the nation.

Steve Settle

“We can always improve [our rebounding],” forward Settle said. “That has been a focal point for us, rebounding and being more physical in the paint. That’s something we have to continue to improve on to get to where we’re trying to get to.”

Temple ranks eighth nationally in free throws made per game (19.2) and also eighth in attempts (26.4 per game). Mashburn Jr. leads the Owls with 4.6 made free throws and 6.0 free throw attempts per game. Temple has 72 all-time wins vs. ranked foes and has won two of its past four against Top 25 teams, including a victory over No. 1 Houston in the 2022-23 season.

Memphis vs Temple Series History

The all-time series between the schools dates to 1952-53 with Memphis holding a 15-11 advantage after winning the last six meetings. Last season, they played just once – scheduled for two this year – and Memphis won 84-77 at Temple behind 23 points and 10 rebounds from David Jones. Jahvon Quinerly added 19 points. Both those guys are gone now. Memphis took the lead with 12:10 remaining in the first half and did not give it up. Jahlil White led Temple with 20 points and eight rebounds.

2024 Memphis vs Temple NCAA Basketball

Not that long ago, Memphis was ranked and looked like it could be a force in the NCAA Tournament. However, the Tigers have struggled for a couple of weeks and have landed squarely on the Big Dance bubble. They can’t afford a loss Thursday at AAC bottom-feeder Temple, and the Tigers are solid favorites on the NCAAB odds. 2024 NCAA Basketball Betting & Expert Analysis Memphis vs Temple | MyBookie Sportsbook Week 14 NCAAB

Memphis vs Temple Last Meeting

This is the only scheduled meeting this season between the teams, although they could meet in the AAC Tournament. Last year, Memphis won both – including by a score of 61-59 at Temple. DeAndre Williams scored 20 points and Kendric Davis hit the game-winning jump shot with one second remaining. Both those guys are gone now. Davis scored 16 second-half points for Memphis to help set up his game-winning shot. Damian Dunn led the way for the Owls) with 23 points. He’s gone as well. Memphis has won five straight in the series and has held the Owls to 65 or fewer points three times in that span without allowing more than 77. The Tigers lead all-time 14-1.

Why Bet on Memphis Tigers?

What has happened to Penny Hardaway’s Tigers? On Jan. 14, they won 112-86 at Wichita State to improve to 15-2 overall and 4-0 in AAC play. Memphis was ranked 10th in the nation. However, the Tigers followed with a brutal four-game skid and at least snapped out of it on Saturday with a 65-63 win over Wichita State on a David Jones game-winner with 2.3 seconds left.

Memphis Last 5

vs Rice – L74-71
@ UAB – L97-88
@ Tulane – L81-79
vs South Florida – L74-73

Wichita State held a 14-point lead with less than 10:00 minutes to go in the game, but a furious Memphis rally resulted in a heartbreaking loss. The Tigers finished on a 25-9 run. WSU committed just five turnovers and attempted eight more free throws. Wichita State’s misses at the free throw line were costly. They went 1-for-4 to finish the game. Memphis outrebounded Wichita State by 12, its largest margin of the season, including 17 offensive rebounds.

Jahvon Quinerly‘s clutch 3-pointer with 44 seconds left gave the Tigers their first lead of the day but it was a midrange pull-up jumper from Jones with 2.8 seconds remaining that sealed the victory. Jones spearheaded the comeback with 16 of his game-high 26 points during the run. He put up 11 straight points for the Tigers to bring them within two points with a minute left to play.

Following a defensive stop and a rebound from Nae’Qwan Tomlin, Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway drew up the perfect play to put the ball in Quinerly’s hands for the go-ahead triple, despite the fifth-year point guard going 0-for-12 from the floor until that moment. It was his only points of the day. On the ensuing possession, the Tigers were whistled for a foul on the rebound and Ronnie DeGray III sank just 1-of-2 at the stripe to tie the game at 63 and set the stage for Jones’ game-winner on the other end.

“You saw a top-10 team in the country in the last eight minutes. That’s who we were early on, and we haven’t been able to kinda regain that since Caleb (Mills) got hurt,” Hardaway said. “Obviously, we wish we would’ve come out and blown (Wichita State) out right away . . . but the last eight minutes is good enough for me.”

Jones enters Thursday as the nation’s fifth-leading scorer at 21.8 points per game. He’s led the team in scoring 18 times this season and has a league-high 13 games of 20-plus points. Jones is first in the conference in scoring, second in three-pointers made (53), fourth in steals per game (2.0) and ninth in rebounding (6.8) and free throw percentage (82.1).

Tomlin drew his second start of the season and finished in double figures with 10 points, six boards and two blocks. He played a season high 32 minutes while shooting 5-of-11 from the field. Malcolm Dandridge was huge with 11 points, a team-high seven rebounds and two blocks. He’s scored double figures in a career-best four consecutive games. Dandridge is shooting 65% from the field in AAC play (39-of-60), which ranks 2nd in the leagues. The big man is averaging 11.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 1.2 steals against conference opponents.

Memphis’ 37.5 field goal percentage on Saturday was its second-lowest mark of the season. The win marked the first for the Tigers when shooting 37.5 percent or lower from the field since beating Houston (60-59) on Feb. 22, 2020. The Tigers are just 4-15 when shooting 37.5 percent or lower in six seasons under Hardaway.

Why Bet on Temple Owls?

Temple (8-14, 1-8 AAC) has been hit hard by injury this year and played without a couple of guys Sunday in losing a seventh straight game, 92-80 in overtime at Tulane. Things looked bleak for Temple as a 13-2 run for Tulane surged the Green Wave to a 68-59 advantage with 3:32 left. The Owls came back, closing regulation on a 17-8 run, the last on a triple by Hysier Miller with seven seconds remaining. In OT, Tulane flipped momentum back in its favor by outscoring Temple 16-4.

Temple Last 5
@ Tulane – L92-80
@ East Carolina – L70-64
vs South Florida – L75-69
vs Rice – L69-66
@ SMU – L77-64

The charity stripe provided a major impact in the contest for the Wave as they shot 88.6 percent, 31-of-35, from the free throw line in the game including 24 consecutive makes to end the game. Tulane put the game away at the free-throw line stripe by shooting a perfect 8-for-8 in overtime. As a team, the Wave shot 54.7 percent from the field. The high shooting percentage was possible because Tulane attacked the rim against the Owls scoring 48 points in the paint.

Jahlil White had one of his best games with 21 points and 15 rebounds. It was his fourth double-double of the season and the eighth of his career. He also added four assists and three steals. Jordan Riley scored a career-high 23 in the contest with six boards. It is the first time two players scored 20+ points in the same game for the Owls since January 18, 2023 against East Carolina. Temple as a team has had six double-doubles in just 22 games so far. The Owls only recorded six such games in 2022-23 and just nine in the last two years combined.

After scoring 12 points, Steve Settle III is just 13 points away from the 1,000 mark in his career. Sunday was just the fifth time in the 128-year history of Temple men’s basketball that the Owls played consecutive overtime games. The five overtime periods TU has played this season is tied for the third most in a year, only trailing seven in 1996-97 (six overtime games).

In league play, the Owls’ scoring margin of minus-2.8 ranks 13th out of 14 teams. Their 37.8% field goal percentage is worst in the conference. They are being out-rebounded by an average of 2.3 per game — only Tulane has been worse. The Owls take care of the ball pretty well (43rd in turnover percentage) and they are forcing 13.1 per game.

Temple has had just five games this season with all of its players available and is 3-2 in those. Temple’s last victory in this series came Jan. 24, 2019 in Philly (85-76).
