Series History

First meeting of the season between the teams. They will play again Feb. 19 in Durham and obviously could again in the ACC or even NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils and Seminoles are meeting for the first time in more than a year as both of the meetings last season were canceled by COVID-19 protocols.

In Duke’s last visit to Tallahassee, Cam Reddish nailed a three-pointer in the closing seconds for an 80-78 victory on Jan. 12, 2019. Duke has won nine of the last 10 in the FSU series and leads the all-time series 41-10, including 38-9 under Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Duke (14-2) easily handled visiting NC State on Saturday, 88-73. Sophomore Mark Williams had 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks as Duke dominated inside. Duke’s 58 points in the paint were a season high, surpassing the 52 vs. Gardner-Webb on Nov. 16, 2021.   Duke blocked 10 shots in the game, its most in a game since 11 at Michigan State on Dec. 3, 2019, and its most in an ACC game since 12 vs. Syracuse on Jan. 14, 2019. It marks Duke’s 12th game this season with five or more blocks. The Blue Devils finished the game with nine dunks – a season high.

Banchero has scored 20+ points in three straight games – the longest stretch by a Duke freshman since Vernon Carey Jr., scored 20+ in four straight games in the 2019-20 season (20 vs. Georgia State on Nov. 15, 31 vs. Cal on Nov. 21, 20 vs. Georgetown on Nov. 22, and 20 vs. Stephen F. Austin on Nov 26). Williams’ eight blocks were the most by a Duke player since Shelden Williams had eight vs. Virginia on Jan. 28, 2006. Williams has four games this season with 6+ blocked shots to lead all power conference players.

Since the calendar turned to 2022, Duke opponents are shooting just .239 (17-of-71) from three-point range — the second-best percentage defense by power conference teams in that span (10th overall). Duke has held five straight opponents — and 11 for the season — to .300 or worse from behind the arc.

Freshman Trevor Keels is second in the ACC in assist/turnover ratio (2.6) and third in the league in steals (1.94). In two games last week, Keels totaled 23 points, 13 assists, four turnovers and seven steals. Duke is 12-0 when Keels scores in double figures.

The Blue Devils have been whistled for fewest fouls in the league per game (13.8) — 16th fewest nationally. Duke has made 48 more free throws than opponents have attempted this season (225-177), which represents the largest disparity in the ACC.

FSU (10-5) won 76-71 at Syracuse on Saturday. Florida State’s Caleb Mills led scored a game-high 19 points and the RayQuan Evans hit key free throws down the stretch. The Seminoles outscored the Orange by a 40-34 margin in the second half and shot 55 percent from the field for the game to win their third consecutive ACC game.  Five different Seminoles made at least one 3-point shot, as the Seminoles shot .600 from the three-point line.

Evans contributed 15 points and two steals for the Seminoles. Evans was a perfect three of three from the line and is shooting .784 from the free throw line during his three seasons as a Seminole. He ranks 10th in the ACC in steals with a 1.7 steals per game average.

In his first career start, sophomore Naheem McLeod recorded four points.  He has scored 30 of his 45 points this season (.667 percent) in the first six ACC games of his career.  McLeod is shooting .692 from the field (nine of 13) in the last four games, and shooting .667 from the field for the season (18 of 27).

With three players (Mills, fourth; Evans, 10th, and Anthony Polite, 11th) ranked in the top 15 in the ACC for steals, the Seminoles are the top ranked team in the ACC for steals with 145 and a 9.7 steals per game average. The Seminoles lead the ACC in both total steals and steals per game.

As for this game, Florida State is 83-5 at home in the last five-plus seasons (.943 winning percentage).  The Seminoles have lost just one ACC home game since a 77-68 win over Clemson on January 22, 2019.  Florida State has won 27 of its last 28 ACC home games since defeating the Tigers and won 25 consecutive ACC home games from January 22, 2019 through March 3, 2021 – the second longest conference winning streak in ACC history.  Only Duke, who won 26 straight ACC home games from 1997-2002, has a longer streak than then Seminoles in the history of the greatest conference in college basketball history.

FSU most recently defeated a top-10 ranked team on February 15, 2021 when it defeated No. 7 Virginia, 80-61, at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
