Navy vs Army Wining Pick: Why bet on that Matchup? – NCAAF Week 16 Odds
The 12-team playoffs are set, and bowl season is ready to begin, but before we get to all of that, there is one more game that we need to talk about.
Yes, we have the annual matchup between Army and Navy to look forward to this weekend, and since it’s the only game going on Saturday, it’s a matchup that requires a deep dive.
Betting Analysis
We could just gloss over aspects of the game and make our usual prediction, but we think this one deserves some special attention.
Specifically, we need to talk about how to wager on this game, which means taking a look at the trends that have come with this game, as well as those for both teams over the course of what has been a long season.
So, with all of that in mind, let’s take a look at the odds and trends, before we close things out by making our pick for the game.
^Recent History
Navy vs Army Wining Pick: This is a matchup that has taken place every year since the early 1900s, with the first ever game taking place in 1890. That alone should tell you the importance of this game and why so many fans are keen to wager on it.
Overall, it is Navy who leads the series by a margin of 62-55-7, but this is a matchup that, as you might imagine, has had some serious swings of dominance. Right now, it is the Army Black Knights that is in the ascendancy, but will that continue this weekend? Here is how the last 10 meetings have gone, after which we will start getting into some trends:
- 2014 – Navy 17 Army 10
- 2015 – Navy 21 Army 17
- 2016 – Army 21 Navy 17
- 2017 – Army 14 Navy 13
- 2018 – Army 17 Navy 10
- 2019 – Navy 31 Army 7
- 2020 – Army 15 Navy 0
- 2021 – Navy 17 Army 13
- 2022 – Army 20 Navy 17
- 2023 – Army 17 Navy 11
While this represents a small cross-section of all the meetings, these 10 are actually quite indicative of the entire history. This matchup tends to be close, with scoring at a premium, which takes us nicely into the odds for this weekend.
^Odds for the 2024 Army Vs Navy Game
Keep in mind that the odds might change at some point this week, but right now, it is Army who are in as a 6 ½ point favorite, with the total set at 39. Given that the Black Knights are ranked, it is no real surprise to see them as the favorite to win, especially when you consider the history of this game when it comes to one team, or another being ranked.
Since 1965, one of these teams has come in ranked in the top 25 on 4 different occasions, with the ranked team winning each time. Now that we know a little bit about the history of the game, as well as the odds for this weekend, let’s start breaking down the trends before we get to our prediction.
^Straight Up Odds and Trends for Army Vs Navy
As already mentioned, the Army Black Knights are the favorite to win, with their odds set at -260. If you are of the belief that the Navy Midshipmen can spring the upset win, then you can get them at very good odds of +215. History would very much seem to be in the favor of the Army Black Knights in this one, but strange things tend to happen in rivalry games.
The Black Knights have won 6 of the last 7 meetings with Navy, after a run of 14 straight years when they lost to the Midshipmen. They come into this weekend with a 10-1 SU record, which has them sitting at #22 in the National Rankings. They have also won all 4 of their road games this season. Their winning run extends back to last season, with the Black Knights now winning 14 of their last 15 games overall.
It has been a very decent season for the Midshipmen, going 8-3 SU to this point, so I don’t necessarily think we can simply write them off here, even though they have had a tough time of things versus the Black Knights in recent years.
^Against the Spread Odds and Trends for Army Vs Navy
When you look back at those past meetings, you see numerous games decided by just a few points, which could make the spread bet this weekend a little risky. The Black Knights are favored by 6 ½, but they have not been a great ATS pick of late, covering the spread just once in their last 5 games. December has been a little kinder, with the Black Knights covering the spread in 5 of their last 7 played in this month.
The Midshipmen have been a very good bet against the spread this season, covering in 7 of their last 10 games. That said, things have gone the opposite way when going against the Black Knights, with Navy managing to cover just 3 times in the last 10 meetings.
^Point Total Odds and Trends for Army Vs Navy
Truth be told, this is the wager that would appear to be the biggest slam dunk of all, given that 16 of the last 18 meetings between these teams have gone UNDER the point total. It seems like an obvious pick, but what are the current trends for both teams in the point total?
Once again, all signs point to the UNDER when you see that 4 of the last 6 games for the Black Knights have gone that route. It is much the same story for the Midshipmen, with 4 of their last 5 games overall going UNDER the point total.
^Navy vs Army Wining Pick & Game Prediction
I am all in on the Black Knights winning on Saturday, but I am on the fence when it comes to the point total. With regard to the total points, I think we have to go with the UNDER.
Army Black Knights 17, Navy Midshipmen 13

Army Black Knights
The Black Knights of Army come into the season after going 6-6 a season ago. Jeff Monken has been there 10 years and won 64 games. A season ago, the Black Knights won this game, so momentum in the rivalry is on their side.
The Black Knights lost their quarterback from a season ago. So, training camp will be a chance for guys to audition for the job. Army does not expect to pass the football much in 2023, but when they do, they need it to be effective. Bryson Daily appears to be the leader in the clubhouse for the starting job.
Tyson Riley, Ay’Juan Marshall, and Tyrell Robinson should all get the opportunity to run the football for the offense. On the defensive side, the pass defense was fantastic a season ago, while the run defense was not sensational. Andre Carter has left the team, but Leo Lowin and Jimmy Carlo should provide punch on the outside.
Navy Midshipmen
Brian Newberry takes over as the new head coach at Navy. Last season, they went 4-8 in Ken Niumatalolo’s final season. Newberry was the defensive coordinator for the last several seasons. The new coach brings in an offensive coordinator that will provide more passing opportunities and new running formations. The option will still be there, but not as prevalent.
Tai Lavatai should be back under center after hurting his knee late in the season. Daba Fofana led the team with nearly 800 yards and 6 touchdowns a season at the fullback position. Maquel Haywood left the program, so new names are going to get chances.
On the defensive side, Navy tries to win games with sacks, stopping the run, and getting stops on third down. The Midshipmen will miss their lineman John Marshall big time, but the secondary will hopefully pick up for his loss. The secondary is led by Rayuan Lane.
What’s Next
For the record, the game will be played at FedEx Field in 2024, M&T Bank Stadium in 2025, MetLife Stadium in 2026, and Lincoln Financial Field for 2027. The winner of the game grabs the Secretary’s Trophy. Navy leads the all-time series 62-54-7.
Army vs. Navy Prediction
This should be another fun game. Expect this to be a low score, with both teams running the football. The clock is going to keep ticking, and the turnovers will be held to a minimum. In the end, we will take Army to win this game 23-13, so -3 would be our Army vs. Navy Betting Prediction for NCAA Football Week 15.
Best of luck with all your NCAA Football betting this season, and enjoy the big Army/Navy game that finishes up the 2023 College Football regular season.
