Beyond the Favorites: Unveiling the 2024 NHL Stanley Cup Odds & Upset Potential

The National Hockey League is in the postseason, and the quest to win the Stanley Cup continues. As a new week is here, the series get further and further along. We do not have a team to the second round yet, but we will see.

Let’s take a look at the most recent Stanley Cup Odds: favorites, winners, and dark horses to consider in the postseason:

NHL Stanley Cup Odds: Favorites Winners and Dark Horses to Consider | MyBookie NHL Preview of the Teams Fighting for the Title

2024 NHL Season | 107th season of the National Hockey League
2024 Stanley Cup Finals: April 20 – TBD

Favorites:

Carolina Hurricanes +400

Carolina is 4/1 odds to win it all. They are the favorites of all the teams in the National Hockey League. This is a great, balanced team that can win games with their scoring, or shutting teams down. The Hurricanes lost on Saturday, but still lead the series against the Islanders 3-1. Carolina will look to close out their first round series on Tuesday at home.

Favorite NHL Pick: Hurricanes +400 | MyBookie Odds for NHL MyBookie NHL Game Odds

Florida Panthers +500

The Panthers were unable to finish the sweep of their state rivals Tampa Bay, but they are still in great shape. Florida is 5/1 odds, just behind the Hurricanes, but ahead of the Rangers and Bruins in the Eastern Conference. Florida did not have it in the loss, falling behind 3-0 after one period. Florida is another team looking to close it out on home ice. They will host the Lightning on Monday,

Winners:

Edmonton Oilers +600

Nothing is ever easy when you are the Edmonton Oilers. That means this first round series against the Los Angeles Kings is not going to come easy. The Oilers are actually the odds on favorites to win the West. Edmonton started terrible and have been great for much of the season. The offense for Edmonton is better than any other team in the league. Game 5 of the best of 7 series between the Oilers and Kings will take place on Wednesday, as they go back to Canada.

Edmonton Oilers
Winner NHL Pick: Oilers +600 | MyBookie Odds for NHL MyBookie NHL Game Odds

New York Rangers +700

The Rangers made quick and easy work of the Washington Capitals. The Rangers are none too thrilled with being the best team in the National Hockey League during the regular season, yet having the fourth best odds in the NHL to win the cup. Yet, here we are. New York has been really good on the defensive side of the puck; allowing just five goals in the first three games of the series. The Rangers are using the Madison Square postseason crowd to their favor. It will be even more of a madhouse now that May is rolling in.

Winner NHL Pick: Rangers +700 | MyBookie Odds for NHL MyBookie NHL Game Odds

Dark Horses:

Colorado Avalanche +750

In the first four games of the series, Colorado scored 21 total goals. This is an awesome offense that really can light the lamp. Colorado is just a season removed from winning the Stanley Cup. It is not a good idea to count them out. Their lead on the Jets at 3-1 in the series is not safe, but a great start.  It will be interesting to see if they can stay healthy through the postseason run. If they do, they are more than a dark horse, they are a true cup contender.

Vegas Golden Knights +900

We are finding out that the 2023-2024 version of the Vegas Golden Knights are not quite ready to give up the claim of being the defending Stanley Cup Champions. After a lackluster regular season, Vegas winning both the first two games on the road was not all that surprising to them, but is putting the rest of the league on notice.  The overtime loss on Saturday made the series 2-1, but a win on Monday would put them a win away from the second round. The Golden Knights will start the new week at 9/1 odds to win the Cup.

Vegas Golden Knights
Dark Horse NHL Pick: Golden Knights +900 | MyBookie Odds for NHL MyBookie NHL Game Odds

Boston Bruins +900

Boston moved a game away from knocking off Toronto in the first round series. The Bruins have been solid all season defensively. They will need to continue that to eliminate a good offensive team in Toronto. The Bruins are also 9/1 odds to win the Stanley Cup.

2024 NHL Season | 107th season of the National Hockey League
2024 Stanley Cup Finals: April 20 – TBD

Carolina Hurricanes +550

The Hurricanes got the postseason party started with a win over the Islanders. Carolina finished the regular season with 111 points, which was just behind the Rangers in the East. The Hurricanes have talent all across their roster, led by Sebastian Aho, who came away with 89 goals on the season.

The Hurricanes were one of the best defensive teams in all of the National Hockey League, as they allowed just 216. It is going to be tough for the Islanders or any team in the postseason to slow this team down. They went 27-10-4 at home, and were nearly just as good on the road.

Carolina Hurricanes
NHL Pick: Hurricanes +550 | MyBookie NHL Odds MyBookie NHL Game Odds

Florida Panthers +700

Florida comes in with the second best odds to win the Stanley Cup this season. They were the best defensive team in the league with 200 goals allowed. Florida won the Atlantic Division with four straight games to finish the regular season.

The Panthers saw Sam Reinhart finish six points away from 100 on the season, while Matthew Tkachuk was great with 88 as well. Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky was one of the best goaltenders in the league, if not the very best. He allowed just 2.37 goals per game and played in 58 games this season.

Florida is a very talented squad that is ready to bring the cup to Sunrise.

Florida Panthers
NHL Pick: Panthers +700 | MyBookie NHL Odds MyBookie NHL Game Odds

Edmonton Oilers +700

As the postseason begins, the Oilers will start with a home series against the Los Angeles Kings. This is the second and third place teams in the Pacific Division. The Oilers finished behind the Canucks in the divisional race, but many, including oddsmakers like their chances in a seven game series.

The Oilers scored 294 goals on the season, which was third to Colorado and Dallas in the West. Connor McDavid and Leon Draiaitl both finished the season with over 100 points. There has been a lot of talk about their lack of success in the postseason, and they are ready to use 2024 to shake that.

Edmonton Oilers
NHL Pick: Oilers +700 | MyBookie NHL Odds MyBookie NHL Game Odds

Colorado Avalanche +700

The Avalanche are just a season removed from winning the Stanley Cup. This is still a very talented team. Colorado struggled on the road this season, with a 19-16-6 record, but come cup time, they are going to be dialed in.

Colorado was led by Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. They both finished with over 100 points on the season. MacKinnon came in with 89 assists, showing off his skills all over the ice. Colorado will start the postseason with a tough test. They will take on another team that recorded 100+ points.

The Winnipeg Jets, the best defensive team in the West, will be their first round opponent. The Jets come in on an 8 game winning streak.

Colorado Avalanche
NHL Pick: Avalanche +700 | MyBookie NHL Odds MyBookie NHL Game Odds

New York Rangers +800

Despite starting the postseason with the best record during the regular season, the New York Rangers come into the postseason with the fifth best betting odds to win the Stanley Cup. Still some doubt on this squad. New York went 55-23-4 on the season, and won their final two games. The Rangers will start the postseason at Madison Square Garden taking on Washington. The Rangers and the city of New York are hoping for a long cup run to keep the Garden busy the rest of the spring. New York saw Artemi Panarin have a monster season with 71 goals and 49 assists.

New York Rangers
NHL Pick: Rangers +800 | MyBookie NHL Odds MyBookie NHL Game Odds

Dallas Stars +850

Coming in sixth in the betting odds to win the Stanley Cup is the Dallas Stars. Dallas went 52-21-9 on the season. Their 113 point was three ahead of Winnipeg for the Central title. Dallas was strong at home, and on the road. The Stars went 26-11-4 at home and 26-10-5 on the road. Dallas scored just shy of 300 goals on the season and had a +64 goal differential. The Stars also won 8 out of their last 10 games to finish strong. The Stars were pretty balanced on the offensive side with Jason Robertson leading the way with 80 points. The Stars are +850 to win the cup.

NHL Stanley Cup Odds: Favorites Winners and Dark Horses to Consider

Previous Betting News

We are in the midst of the final week of the regular season in the NHL, which means that if you want to wager on the winner of the Stanley Cup, you might want to do so soon. Once the postseason begins, we are going to start to see the odd shorten on the favorites, especially if they jump out quick and look good from the off. That said, you might still be up in the air when it comes to picking the eventual winner, as there are certainly a handful of teams who could make a deep run and potentially hoist the trophy. With that in mind, we are going to try and help by sharing the current odds to win the Stanley Cup, and then breaking the teams down into favorites and dark horses, so let’s get to it.

Updated 2023 Stanley Cup Odds, picks, favorites & dark horses

Favorites to Win the Stanley Cup

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the Boston Bruins are in as the favorites to win it all at odds of +360. They will end the regular season with the best record in the league, which means getting their hands on the President’s Trophy. Finishing with the nest record seldom translates to playoff success, though, but this team does look primed to go all the way, especially since they will have home ice advantage and are 31-4-3 in their own building.

To get out of the East and into the Stanley Cup Final, the Bruins may well have to get past the Carolina Hurricanes (+930). It’s not over yet, but the Canes look set to win the Metropolitan Division, which is an achievement in itself given how strong that division has been all season.

Over in the West, it is the Colorado Avalanche (+650) who the bookies like as the favorite to represent their conference in the Stanley Cup Final. They have not been as dominant as expected, though, so getting out of the West is going to be no easy task.

Stanley Cup Dark Horse Picks

There are a few other teams, most notably the New Jersey Devils (+1125) and Vegas Golden Knights (+1350) who could make a run in their respective conferences that most fans would not see as particularly surprising, With this part of the article, though, we are looking for teams that would be somewhat surprising and fall into the dark horse category.

Some are sure to take the Toronto Maple Leafs (+1000), but their stunning lack of playoff success in recent years would make me very nervous indeed. While it would mean that their odds would shorten, they are a team I would take a wait and see attitude with. I’d be more inclined to go with the Tampa Bay Lightning (+1550) as the dark horse in the East, as this is a team that knows how to get the job done in the playoffs.

In the West, it is the LA Kings (+2000) who jump out as a bit of a dark horse candidate, although you would have to include the Edmonton Oilers (+1100) in that category, too, but they would need to tighten up dramatically on defense to have a legitimate shot.

2020 Stanley Cup Odds, Picks & Darkhorses – NHL Betting

Previous Betting News

With the NHL set to return to action after the coronavirus pandemic that brought professional sports to a complete halt in early March, it’s time to take a look at the odds to win this season’s Stanley Cup Trophy. Now, as the restart gets set to get underway this Saturday, August 1, you should know that two sites in Canada have been chosen for the league’s bubble. Edmonton will host the Western Conference and Toronto will host the Eastern Conference. Let’s find out how each team stack to each other so you can place your bets against their NHL odds.

2020 Stanley Cup Odds, Picks, Favorites & Darkhorses

The Stanley Cup Final will be played in Edmonton in October. All games will be played in empty arenas and players will be living in their own “bubble” communities during the course of the postseason.

The bottom eight teams in each conference will play a best-of-five play-in series, while the top four teams in each conference have a round robin tournament to determine seeding. Once the field narrows to 16, the teams will play traditional best-of-seven series until two teams reach the finals.

In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers are the top four seeds. Out in the West, the defending champion St. Louis Blues, along with the Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars are the top four seeds. Now, let’s take a look at the value-packed odds to win it all.

The Favorites

Tampa Bay Lightning +550

The Lightning have been installed as prohibitive favorites despite sitting in second place in the Eastern Conference behind Boston. Tampa Bay ranks first in scoring (3.5 gpg) and eighth in goals allowed (2.8 gpg). The Lightning are loaded with talent, starting with winger and reigning league MVP Nikita Kucherov (33 goals) and centers, Steven Stamkos (29 goals) and Brayden Point (25 goals). Then, there’s the fact that Tampa Bay needs to make up for one of the all-time playoff upsets after getting ousted in the first round a year ago by Columbus despite being the top seed in the East.

Boston Bruins +600

Boston leads the league in fewest goals allowed (2.39 gpg) and the Bruins also rank an encouraging ninth in scoring (3.2 gpg). Right-winger David Pastrnak is tied with Alexander Ovechkin for a league-high 48 goals while Brad Marchand has 87 points and 59 assists while center Peter Bergeron has racked up an impressive 31 goals. The bad news is that, in the last 10 seasons, only one team has advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in consecutive years and that was the the Pittsburgh Penguins, who repeated as champions in 2016 and 2017.

Colorado Avalanche +700

The young and talented Avalanche are tied with St. Louis with a Western Conference high, 42 wins while ranking a stupendous fourth in scoring (3.4 gpg) and equally eye-opening sixth in goals allowed (2.7 gpg). Center Nathan MacKinnon leads the way with 35 goals and 58 assists. Oh…did I forget to mention the Avs are the only team in the Western Conference ranked inside the top 5 in scoring?

Vegas Golden Knights +750

Vegas struggled out of the gate, but the Golden Knights got their act together in a hurry before the hiatus and are just three wins behind St. Louis and Colorado in the win column. Left-winger Max Pacioretty has a team-high 66 points while right-winger Mark Stone has 63 points. The Knights have two other players that have topped the 20-goal mark heading into the restart.

Philadelphia Flyers +1000

With 41 victories, Philly has recorded the third most victories in the Eastern Conference. More importantly, the Flyers rank an identical seventh in scoring (3.3 gpg) and goals allowed (2.8 gpg) and have a whopping nine players that have reached double digits in goals scored. Not only that, but Philadelphia was the hottest team in all of hockey at the hiatus and now they’ll look to pick up where they left off.

St. Louis Blues +1100

The defending champs got off to a slow start, but they picked up the pace nicely and now hit the restart with a conference-high 42 wins. Despite ranking a modest 14th in scoring (3.1 gpg), St. Louis is elite defensively in limiting the opposition to just 2.7 goals per game (5th). A whopping 11 players have reached double digits in goals scored, though no player has more than25 goals.

Legitimate Contenders

Washington Capitals +1200

The Caps are tied with Philadelphia with 41 victories. Washington ranks an Uninspiring 18th in goals allowed (3.1 gpg), but a stellar second in scoring by putting up 3.4 goals per contest. Defenseman John Carlson has a team-high 75 points and a whopping 60 assists (fourth) while perennial all-star Alex Ovechkin is tied for a league-high 48 goals.

Pittsburgh Penguins +1200

My other top legitimate contender is Pittsburgh. The Penguins have 40 wins heading into the restart while ranking 10th in scoring (3.2 gpg) and an encouraging 12th in goals allowed (2.8 gpg). Star center Evgeni Malkin leads the way with a team-high 74 points and the Pens have a mind-boggling 11 players that have reached the double-digit mark in goals scored.

Longshot Selections

Dallas Stars +1500

The Stars rank fifth in goals allowed (2.52 gpg) and that kind of defense means they’ll have a decent chance in a Western Conference that isn’t exactly loaded with offensively explosive teams. The bad news is that Dallas averages a paltry 2.6 goals per game (26th).

Toronto Maple Leafs +1800

Sure, the Leafs have been awful defensively this season in giving up 3.2 goals per game (26th), but Toronto also ranks an encouraging third in scoring (3.4 gpg). Center Auston Matthews may be the best player in the game today (47 goals, 80 points) and right-winger Mitch Marner is an all-star. Make no mistake about it, the Leafs could outscore their way to a couple of upsets this coming postseason.

Edmonton Oilers +2200

I believe the Oilers are offering some terrific value as a +220 pick. Edmonton had 37 wins at the break and they have a superstar in 2017 league MVP Connor McDavid. The Oilers rank an identical 15th in scoring (3.1 gpg) and goals allowed (3.0 gpg) and that’s just not the worst thing ever.

New York Rangers +3300

My last longshot selection is the New York Rangers. Not only are they the top money team in the league, but the Rangers rank an encouraging fifth in scoring (3.33 gpg). Yes, they allow a generous 3.1 goals per contest (23rd), but New York has absolutely owned Boston and they look worthy of a longshot wager if you ask me.

The Rest of the Field

Stanley Cup Picks

No. 5 Vegas

I love the solid hockey the Knights play at both ends of the ice.

No. 4 Boston

The Bruins are outstanding at both ends of the ice, plus they’re super hungry!

No. 3 Colorado

The Avalanche just look like a team that should win it all this season in ranking inside the top six at both ends of the ice.

No. 2 Philadelphia

No, they’re not the Broad Street Bullies of old, but Philadelphia can absolutely explode on anyone and they were on fire at the break.

No. 1 Tampa Bay

I like the Lightning to go from one of the all-time playoff failures to league champions. In what has been an absolutely crazy year, it just seems fitting to me that Tampa Bay gets a do-over for their epic postseason collapse a year ago.
