The second-to-last Monday night game of the regular season might be the worst MNF matchup of the season in terms of competitiveness as the injury-ravaged New Orleans Saints visit the playoff-bound Green Bay Packers, who are two-TD favorites on the NFL odds.

New Orleans Saints Analysis
The Saints are playing out the string under interim head coach Darren Rizzi, who has gone 3-2 since taking over for the fired Dennis Allen and will be considered for the full-time gig. The Saints nearly staged a big rally in Week 15 but came up just short in a 20-19 home loss to Washington. New Orleans scored as time expired and Rizzi opted to try for 2 and the win but it failed.
Derek Carr
QB Carr missed the game injured, won’t play Monday and probably is done for the season if not his Saints career as the team may go in a different direction in the offseason. Carr injured his hand in the final minutes of a Dec. 8 win over New York Giants when Carr attempted to leap over a teammate for a first down. Carr’s current deal pays out $40 million in 2025. Of that amount, $10 million is fully guaranteed. Another $30 million is guaranteed for injury. It becomes fully guaranteed in March. If Carr can’t pass a physical by the date on which the injury guarantee becomes fully guaranteed, the Saints can’t avoid the $30 million.

Jake Haener
Second-year player Haener started last week against the Commanders but was horrific and pulled at halftime for rookie Spencer Rattler, who will go Monday. Rattler was 10-of-21 for 135 yards and a touchdown in the second half. In four games this season, the fifth-round draft pick has 706 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Darren Rizzi
Rizzi said that Rattler gave the team a spark against the Commanders and he was impressed by how he led the team down the field to score in the final two minutes. Rattler previously started three games when Carr was out with an oblique injury and New Orleans lost all three.
“I think he learned a lot of things,” Rizzi said of Rattler’s first three starts and then his outing vs. Washington. “The thing that probably impressed me the most was probably that two-minute drill (at the end of the fourth quarter). I really liked how he – under the pressure – he performed and I didn’t see a sense of panic at all. I thought the last three games he was out there, like any rookie quarterback, sometimes he looked a little panicky. I saw him much more relaxed, I saw him much more in control, I saw a lot more leadership out of him. That was the impressive part.
Alvin Kamara
Pro Bowl running back Kamara is also going to miss Monday’s game and probably the rest of the season with a groin injury. Kamara, who is just 50 yards away from his first 1,000-yard rushing season, sustained the injury during the loss to Washington. Kamara has rushed for a career-high 950 yards this season. He has also tallied 543 receiving yards, his highest total since 2020. The team last week added former Chiefs first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire for added insurance at tailback.
Chris Olave
The Saints also last week opened up the 21-day practice window for top wide receiver Chris Olave, so he might return. Olave was placed on IR in November after sustaining two concussions this season. Olave changed his helmet to a safer model before sustaining the second concussion. Olave has missed a total of six games this season while in concussion protocol, including the past five. He sought out several opinions and saw specialists regarding the concussions before making his return.
^Green Bay Packers Analysis
Green Bay won for the fourth time in five games in Week 15, 30-13 in Seattle to get on the verge of clinching a playoff spot – it would clinch with a win Monday. Jordan Love completed 20-of-27 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns against the Seahawks. Though Love played all 64 of the Packers’ offensive snaps in the win, he was seen limping late in the game but it’s nothing serious.
While Green Bay’s heavy reliance on Josh Jacobs has limited his overall passing volume of late, Love has been highly efficient over his last four starts with an average of 218.0 yards per game and 8.9 yards per attempt to go with seven touchdowns and no interceptions.
Matt LaFleur
“This is the best ball he’s played,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “Just when I look at all the little things … in terms of his ability to manipulate the pocket when he’s under duress, getting the ball to his checkdowns, or whatever it may be, I think he’s playing at a really high level.”
It helps that Love has gotten past the knee and groin injuries that slowed him early in the season. Love threw his 11th interception of the season on Nov. 17 against the Chicago Bears. That matched his entire total from last season.
Josh Jacobs
Jacobs rushed 26 times for 94 yards and a touchdown while catching all four of his targets for 42 yards against Seattle. Jacobs came six rushing yards shy of his fourth 100-yard rushing performance, but he’s up to 12 rushing touchdowns and has scored at least one in five straight, one of the longest runs in team history. Entering Week 16, only Saquon Barkley (285) and Kyren Williams (280) carried the football more than Jacobs (265). Only Barkley (1,688) and Derrick Henry (1,474) produced more rushing yards than Jacobs’ 1,147 through 14 games. Jacobs is on pace for 312 carries this year, which would make Jacobs just the fifth running back in Packers history to eclipse 300 carries in a season and the first in 16 years (Ryan Grant, 312 in 2008).

Edgerrin Cooper
For his performance against Seattle in a return from injury, rookie linebacker Cooper was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week – he also was in Week 8 after registering eight tackles, a strip-sack and pass deflection in Green Bay’s 30-27 win over Jacksonville. He’s the first Packers player to win NFC Defensive Player of the Week twice in a season since Clay Matthews in 2010. Cooper is also the first Packers rookie to win NFL/NFC weekly defensive award twice in the same season since its inception in 1984.
Jaire Alexander
Pro Bowl cornerback Alexander has missed the past four games but is likely to return Monday. It’s the 32nd straight season (1993-2024), Green Bay plays on MNF. It is the NFL’s longest-ever appearance streak. It’s also the latest MNF game ever at Lambeau Field. It will be just the fourth MNF game ever at home in the month of December. Green Bay has won the previous three (2022, 2014, 2009). All-time, Green Bay is 37-34-1 (.521) on MNF.
Dating back to 2000, Green Bay is 14-5 at home on MNF, a .737 winning percentage that ranks No. 5 in the NFL over that span. It will be the last of four consecutive scheduled prime-time games for Green Bay, which is the first time the Packers have played four straight prime-time games in a single season since the merger. Green Bay is 9-1 in non-division games this season, a .900 winning percentage that is tied for No. 1 in the NFL (Minnesota, 9-1).
^Saints vs Packers Series History
The Packers have won 18 of 28 regular-season matchups (.643) against the Saints. Green Bay is 11-3 (.786) at home in the series. Six of the last seven games between the two teams at Lambeau Field have been decided by single digits, including an 18-17 victory by Green Bay last season in Week 3. The Packers have scored 27-plus points in 11 home games against the Saints. It is the second MNF meeting between the Packers and the Saints (2008 at New Orleans) and the first at Lambeau.

Packers Seeking Bounce Back at Home
In their first season without Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers have achieved modest success on the offensive front, notably averaging an impressive 31 points per game, securing them the second spot in NFL rankings. Jordan Love has been a pivotal figure, tossing an impressive six touchdowns during the initial two games of the season.
The Week Two defeat highlighted the significance of Aaron Jones, who was notably absent from the Packers’ lineup. Jones had showcased his versatility in the Week 1 victory over the Bears, amassing 86 receiving yards. Additionally, the Packers have heavily relied on AJ Dillon, with 28 carries already in the books over the first two games.
As the Packers gear up for their first home game of the 2023 season, they are set to host the Detroit Lions next week on Thursday Night Football, marking the Lions’ second appearance on the prime-time Thursday slot this season. Given the uncertainty surrounding the consistency of Jordan Love, predicting Green Bay Packers’ outcomes will undoubtedly pose a challenge.
Saints Seeking 3-0 Start
In the aftermath of their Monday Night Football victory, the New Orleans Saints encountered a setback with the injury to Jamaal Williams, leaving uncertainty regarding his duration on the injured list. The return of Alvin Kamara is not anticipated until after Week 3.
However, the silver lining came from Tony Jones Jr.’s emergence, as he delivered an impactful performance with two rushing touchdowns in the win. Heading into Week 3, Taysom Hill currently leads the Saints in rushing, amassing 79 yards on 12 carries.
Derek Carr, in his inaugural season as the quarterback, hasn’t produced jaw-dropping performances but has effectively guided the offense to two victories. Carr boasts a formidable receiving corps featuring Michael Thomas and Chris Olave. While Olave leads the team with nearly 200 receiving yards, Thomas has become a reliable target for Carr in the passing game. As the season unfolds, the New Orleans Saints’ offensive statistics are poised to witness improvement, particularly in the passing game.
The Saints are amidst a challenging stretch of games, with four out of five played on the road. This marks the second consecutive road matchup, with Tampa Bay next on the agenda before facing the Patriots and Texans in the subsequent two weeks.
New Orleans Saints vs Green Bay Packers Final Prediction | Packers Grab First Home Win
The Green Bay Packers are back at home. The Packers faithful will be ready to root their green and gold on to victory in this one. The Packers hope to get Aaron Jones back. Jordan Love is ready to compete in front of his home crowd. Look for the Green Bay defense to keep Derek Carr off balance from start to finish here and cause a couple of turnovers.
The bet to make for this game is the Green Bay Packers -2 over the New Orleans Saints, giving the Saints their first loss of the 2023 season.
