The 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge brings May to a close on the PGA Tour, with the 120-man field set to tee it up at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The event is one of five events on the PGA Tour that is designated as an invitation-only event. Tournament play begins on Thursday, May 25th, and concludes on Sunday, May 28th, with a traditional cut after the first two rounds of the tournament.

The defending champion for the event is Sam Burns, who defeated Texas native Scottie Scheffler in a playoff to capture his fourth PGA Tour victory. Burns posted a four-day score of 271, nine-under par.

Colonial Country Club

Colonial Country Club was established in 1936 and has been the host of this tournament since its inception in 1946. The course sits along the south bank of the Trinity River and was designed by Perry Maxwell and John Bredemus. From the back tees the course stretches over 7,200 yards and creates a challenging task playing as a par-70.

The four par-3s measure over 190 yards in length, with the par-3 4th measuring approximately 247 yards. The par-5 first hole runs 565 yards, while the second par-5, the 11th hole, stretches well over 600 yards. Par-4s offer the best scoring opportunities, with many at 450 yards or less.

The Field

This year’s field is filled with numerous players ranked inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Headlining the field is world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler, fresh off a T2 at the PGA Championship a week ago. Scheffler looks to collect his third victory of the calendar year and second of his career in his home state.

Joining Scheffler in the field is Lone Star native Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, Max Homa, and Collin Morikawa. Spieth won this event in 2016. Viktor Hovland, who played in the final pairing on Sunday of the PGA Championship, is set to tee it up as well. 

Past champions in the field this week alongside Burns and Spieth include Justin Rose (2018), Kevin Kisner (2017), Chris Kirk (2015), and Zach Johnson (2012, 2010). Johnson owns the tournament’s scoring record with a 259, 21-under set in 2010.

PGA club professional Michael Block, who became one of the main storylines at last week’s major with his T15 finish, earned the final exemption into the tournament and will try to keep the magic going for another week.

Charles Schwab Challenge Betting Favorites

Scheffler is a heavy pre-tournament favorite heading into Thursday’s first round. Four players, Hovland, Finau, Spieth, and Morikawa, are his closest competitors at the books. Hovland and Spieth are looking to win for the first time in 2023, while Morikawa hasn’t picked up a victory since 2021.

Sungjae Im looks to shake off a missed cut at Oak Hill and find the form he had when he posted three-straight T10s heading into the season’s second major. Homa is another favorite trying to shake off a T55 last week and earn his third win of the season.

Rounding out the top 10 favorites are Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, and last year’s winner Sam Burns.

Early Betting Favourites for 2021 Charles Schwab Challenge

Jordan Spieth (+900)

Jordan Spieth enters the 2021 Charles Schwab Challenge top favorite to walk away with the spoils and repeat his success from 2016. He has had a solid run leading up to the PGA Championship, winning the Valero Texas Open, finishing T5 at Masters, and T9 at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

Unfortunately, Spieth failed to deliver at the Ocean Course, ending in T30 with +2. Regardless, the Charles Schwab Challenge is an entirely different tournament with a lot shorter course, which suits Spieth and his playstyle.

Justin Thomas (+1100)

Justin Thomas is the only golfer out of the top favorites that have never won the Charles Schwab Challenge or finished inside the top two. Thomas also did not make the cut at the PGA Championship, which could work in his favor as he had a weekend off to rest – unlike most competitors in the field.

Whether Thomas is worth a bet at the offered odds is another question, and we believe that there are better picks to choose from. Although an excellent player, his stats are not nearly as appealing as that of Spieth (relative to the offered odds), making the latter a far more appealing pick at the current price.

Collin Morikawa (+1400)

Collin Morikawa finished T8 at the PGA Championship and now returns to the Colonial Country Club as the 2020 runner-up. Prior to his solid showing at the Ocean Course, Morikawa also managed T7 at RBC Heritage and T18 at Masters, indicating good form.

What’s more, the shorter Colonial Country Club course should be better for Morikawa. He has proven he knows his way around the course last year – despite missing the short put that ended up costing him the win – and you can’t really doubt his ability to lock in another top finish.

Daniel Berger (+1600)

Daniel Berger is the defending champion of the Charles Schwab Challenge, so it’s hard to look past him as one of the favorites to do it again. That’s mainly because Berger tends to do better on shorter courses and underperforms longer, such as the PGA Championship’ Ocean Course.

Berger finished the PGA Championship in T75, which is obviously not good, but looking back, he has finished T3 on TPC Craig Ranch, T13 at the RBC Heritage, and T9 at The Players. A good choice at a great price.

Abraham Ancer (+1800)

If you’re looking for early value picks, look no further than Abraham Ancer. He is in exceptional form and has been playing exceptionally well of late.

Ancer finished T8 at the PGA Championship, second at Wells Fargo Championship, fifth at the Valspar Championship, and T18 at RBC Heritage.

What makes Ancer stand out from the rest of the field is that he is a very accurate player, and that’s exactly what is required to win at the Colonial Country Club. What’s more, the Charles Schwab Challenge course is not nearly as punishing as the Ocean Course, allowing golfers to play a bit more aggressively – a style in which Ancer can shine.

Rory McIlroy

This will be the first time that we see the #1 ranked player in the world play on the Colonial course, so it’s tough to say whether or not that will be a problem. The top players should be able to adapt to anything that they face. McIlroy was on an absolute tear at the start of the season, winning once and finishing in the top 5 in each of his 6 starts. That run was good enough to put him at #3 in the FedEx Cup standings.

Jon Rahm

Over the past couple of seasons, there have been few golfers on the PGA Tour as consistent as Jon Rahm. The only major knock on the Spaniard is that he had all too often played the role of the bridesmaid, with tour wins seemingly tough to come by. That said, he is always near the top of the leaderboard on the final day of every tournament that he appears in and you get the sense that a real breakthrough is coming.

Brooks Koepka

While most players were probably disappointed to see the shutdown occur, Koepka may actually have welcomed it. He was off to a brutal start to the 2020 season, either missing cuts or failing to make any type of impact. It will certainly be interesting to see if the time off allowed him to get his head straight and sort out any injuries that might have been bothering him. Koepka can never be counted out, so he might be worth a look.

Justin Thomas

Unlike Koepka, Thomas will have been disappointed to see the lockdown hit, as he was on fire in the early going. Before the stoppage in play, Thomas had already picked up a couple of wins, and while there were also a couple of missed cuts in there, he was mostly landing at the or near the top of the board when he made it into the weekend. It should be noted that this will be his first time playing competitive golf at Colonial.

Dustin Johnson

You could certainly make an argument that Johnson’s dominant run in the PGA is over, as he had not come close to matching the 4 wins that he had on the tour in 2017. He has dropped out of the #1 spot now, but he is also still in the top 5 in the world rankings, so we should perhaps not be quite so quick to dismiss him from contention next weekend.

Among the less than +2500 odds choices have the best chance of winning the 2019 Charles Schwab Challenge?

The PGA called this tournament the Fort Worth Invitational last year. Justin Rose shot a -20. He beat last week’s PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka by 3 strokes. Koepka is taking the week off after winning the PGA. That leaves Rose as the favorite. Rose could be vulnerable here, though.

He shot a +5 at the PGA Championship. Although that was good enough for a Top 30 finish, it wasn’t good enough for him to get within shouting distance of Koepka and Dustin Johnson.

Of the favorites, the best pick might be Jon Rahm. The 24-year-ol Spaniard had a terrible time at the PGA. He missed the cut after a 70 first round and shooting a 75 in Round 2. Before the PGA last week, his form was great. Rahm won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in the previous tournament.

He also finished ninth at the Masters. Rahm should turn his form around here. He shot a respectable -10 at Colonial Country Club last year. Unless Rose runs away with it, Rahm will be in the final duo on Sunday. He’s got a big shot to win.

Who’s the best choice between +2500 and +4000 odds to win this weekend?

Although Tony Finau, Paul Casey, Bryson DeChambeau and Kevin Kisner all have a chance, the golfer to consider between +2500 and +4000 odds is Louis Oosthuizen. Oosthuizen shot a +10 at the PGA Championship.

He started out well. He finished Round 1 with a 70. His Round 2 ended with a 68. But, he imploded on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, Oosthuizen shot a 73. Sunday saw him shoot a 79. If not for Saturday and Sunday, he’d have possibly finished in the Top 10.

Oosthuizen shot a -10 at Colonial Country Club last year. He should be in the mix at least on Thursday and Friday. If he can maintain his consistency over the weekend, who knows? Louis Oosthuizen is definitely worth a look at the odds.

Which golfer from +4500 to +5500 odds has the best chance of taking the 2019 Charles Schwab trophy?

The pick here is easy. Emiliano Grillo shot a -16 at this tournament last year. That was only 4 stroks off Rose. Grillo hasn’t made the Top 10 in 4 straight tournaments. He’s hit well enough to make the cut in all four tournaments, though. That includes making the cut at both the Masters and the PGA Championship.

Emiliano Grillo knows how to hit the ball at Colonial Country Club. He’s the man to back if you’re looking for a +5000 dog.

Even though Na’s form says he has no shot, professional golfers often key in on a couple of tournaments a year. If this is one of Na’s key tournaments of 2019, he could be in the mix on Sunday. The odds are excellent, +6600. Consider Kevin Na if you’re looking to back a major underdog.
