Ludvig Aberg +1600

Aberg was not great at the Sentry, but rallied on the final day to shoot a 10 under and get to 47th place in the event. Aberg finished 2023 with a win at the RSM Classic, which finished a great run of events which started in August. He finished in the Top 10 six times in seven events. The 24 year old from Sweden comes into the rankings on the PGA Tour at 30. Last year was his first year on the tour out of Texas Tech.

Matt Fitzpatrick +1600

Fitzpatrick is coming off a 14th place finish at the Sentry. To finish 2023, Fitzpatrick finished 4th at the Hero World Challenge. This is the same guy that finished in the Top 20 of the BMW in September. Fitzpatrick, out of Northwestern University has been on the tour since 2014, and comes into this season ranked 8th in the world.

Tyrell Hatton +1800

Hatton’s first event of the season finished in 14th place at the Sentry. Now, the English man will look to get inside the Top 10 for the first time since the BMW in September, which he finished second in. The fiery 32 year old starts the season ranked 14th in the PGA Tour rankings.

Brian Harman +2000

Harman carded a nine under 64 on the final day to finish fifth in the Sentry. Harman is the Champion Golfer of the Year. This is a course that fits his skill set well, so taking him at 20/1 odds is not crazy. Harman is the 9th ranked player in the world, just ahead of Wyndham Clark, who rounds out the Top 10.

Russell Henley +2000

Henley was not great at the Sentry, as he finished 52nd place. He struggled the first three days of the event, and rallied with a 5 under on the final day. The 34 year old will certainly look for improvement here. The American comes in at 27th in the early season rankings. He is just ahead of Cameron Smith and Justin Thomas.

Corey Conners +2200

Conners finished 33rd at the Sentry. That was his first PGA event since November, when he finished 44th at the RMS. Conners, the Canadian had a pretty average 2022-2023 season, so he is looking for a big time bounce back. The 32 year old starts the season just below Harris English, and above Eric COle and Justin Rose, at 38th in the PGA Tour Rankings.

We are still in the very early stages of the new PGA season, with players trying to get up to speed in smaller tournaments before we get into the meat of the season. This weekend, the players will be in beautiful Hawaii for the Sony Open and a chance to nab a share of the almost $8 million purse. Over the last 7 seasons, we have seen 7 different winners of this tournament, with Hideki Matsuyama winning it last season. The bookies currently have the defending champion at odds of +1875, which is not surprising when it has been so long since we’ve had a back-to-back winner at this one. There are several players ahead of him on the bookies board, so let’s take a look at the Sony Open Odds.

Joo-Hyung Kim (+1075)

Kim is coming off his best season as a pro on the PGA Tour, but he is already well on pace to better the lone win that he had last year. He has played in 3 events already this season, winning one of them and not finishing worse than 11th in the other two. While he only has 2 wins on the tour, this is still a player who knows how to get the job done, as he has 7 other wins in international events. This is not the strongest field of players imaginable, so given his early season form, Kim might be well worth a look.

Sung-Jae Im (+1275)

It has been a busy start to the season for Im, who has played in several different events ahead of this one, so he should be warmed up and ready to go. While Im may not necessarily be a household name, he is sitting in the top 20 in the world rankings, so he is certainly no slouch. His best performance to this point in the season was a 7th place finish at the Shriners Children’s Open. I think we are looking at him as a top 5 or top 10 finisher here as opposed to the winner.

Jordan Spieth (+1475)

This is a player who got off to a staggering start on the PGA Tour, winning majors and dominating the game in a big way. His best season came in 2014-15, when he won 5 tournaments. Since then, he has cooled off rather dramatically, but he does still have 13 total wins on the tour, so this is a player who knows how to get the job done when he is on his game. Unfortunately, he has not really been on it in the early going, failing to crack the top 10 in the 2 tournaments that he has played to this point. This is a weaker field, though, so perhaps Spieth can get back on track.

Brian Harman (+1675)

Playing Harman to win this event is certainly a bit of a risk when you consider that he is now 35 years of age and had just 2 wins on the PGA Tour. He is, though, off to a very steady start to the season and already has a pair of 2nd place finishes under his belt, as well as close to $2 million in earnings. I still see Harman as a bit of a longshot to win this tournament, but he would certainly be worth taking to finish in the top 5.

The 2022 Sony Open in Hawaii returns to conclude the Hawaiian stops after kicking off the 2022 schedule with the Sentry Tournament of Champions last week. The Tour jumps from the island of Maui to the island of O’ahu as the field descends on Waialae Country Club with tournament play beginning on Thursday, January 13th and concluding on Sunday, January 16th.

Kevin Na picked up his fifth PGA Tour victory last season at the Sony Open in Hawaii, firing a four-day total of 21-under and beating Chris Kirk and Joaquin Niemann by one stroke. Na aims to be the first player to repeat at this event since Jimmy Walker won it in 2014 and 2015.

Waialae Country Club

Waialae Country Club has hosted the Sony Open in Hawaii since 1965 and is one of the longest-tenured venues. A Seth Raynor design, the course stretches 7,044 yards and plays as a par-70.

Founded in 1927, the course contrasts the open and hilly layout players faced last week at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Waialae showcases a flatter and narrower track and wind can play a factor. Expect a lower-scoring tournament this week, with the averaging winning score around 19-under over the last decade.

Sony Tournament in Hawaii Field

The field expands from 39 to 144 this week, with 24 players making the island-hop after last week’s tournament. Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama highlights the field after Bryson DeChambeau was a late withdrawal from the tournament this week. Matsuyama finished T13 last week at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Last week’s champion Cameron Smith plans to tee it up. Smith won this event back in 2020. Other recent past champions making the start include Matt Kuchar and Patton Kizzire.

Many of last season’s Korn Ferry Tour graduates make their first start of 2022, led by last year’s points leader Stephan Jaeger. Fans also get a chance to watch the No. 1 amateur in the world Keita Nakajima play in the tournament of a sponsorship exemption.

Sony Tournament in Hawaii Betting Odds

Cameron Smith has a chance to win the back-to-back tournament, and Vegas gives him the best chance this week at +800 odds. Smith didn’t have his best stuff here last year, finishing T62 after taking home the victory in 2020.

After Smith, the field opens up with Webb Simpson (+1200) having the next-best odds. Simpson had a pair of top-15 finishes during the fall swing and finished 17th at the Hero World Challenge in his last event played.

International players Sung-Jae Im and Marc Leishman are grouped together at +1600. Im won at the Shriners Children’s Open in the fall and wrapped up last week T8. Leishman opened the fall with a fourth and third-place finish and comes to O’ahu after a T10 showing in Maui.

Rounding out the favorites include Matsuyama (+1800) and Canadian Corey Conners. Conners played only three events in the fall, his last a T22 at the RSM Classic in mid-November.

Odds to Win 2021 PGA Sony Open

Now, let’s get to my top five golfers to bet on this weekend.

No. 5 Adam Scott

Currently 22nd in the official world golf rankings, the 40-year-old Australian has finished inside the Top 40 in all four events he’s played this season. The 2013 Masters champ comes into this event fresh off a T21 finish in last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions event. Scott ranks 16th in driving distance (208.7), 53rd in birdie average (4.31) and just has the look of a golfer that is going to contend for the outright win in my opinion.

No. 4 Collin Morikawa

After missing the cut in his first two events this season, the 23-year-old Morikawa has finished inside the Top 50 in four straight tournaments. While I had the world No. 7 as my top pick to win last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions event, the reigning PGA Championship winner finished an encouraging seventh. Morikawa ranks 11th in driving accuracy (71.07%) and 55th in birdie average (4.30) and I believe he’s going to challenge for his first victory since winning his first major last August.

No. 3 Harris English

Just last week, I had the 31-year-old English as my No. 2 pick to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions and he backed that pick up by claiming the title In eight events this season, English has recorded five Top 10 finishes. 29th in the official world golf rankings, English ranks 45th in driving accuracy (66.76%), a stellar sixth in birdie average (4.82) and fifth in scoring average (69.341). I fully expect English will have a chance to go back-to-back this weekend!

No. 2 Sungjae Im

18th in the OWGR, the 22-year-old Im has finished inside the top-five in two of his last three tournaments. Im finished T5 in last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions event after missing the cut in his previous tournament, the RSM Classic in November. Just prior to that, Im finished T2 at last year’s Masters. In nine events this season, Im has four Top 25 finishes and a pair of Top 10 finishes. Im ranks 22nd in driving accuracy (69.49%), 39th in birdie average (4.47) and 46th in scoring average (70.328) and I believe he’s going to have a real shot to win!

No. 1 Webb Simpson

Eighth in the OGWR, Simpson has finished inside the top 40 in all six tournaments he’s played in this season while finishing T17 or better in five of those events, including last weekend’s Sentry Tournament of Champions. The 35-year-old North Carolina native ranks a phenomenal third in driving accuracy (74.11%), 48th in birdie average (4.38) and 24th in scoring average (70.012). Maybe it’s me, but I think Simpson looks like a lock to challenge for the win this coming weekend.
