Houston – C.J. Stroud at Kansas City – Patrick Mahomes

Stroud got it going in the impressive 32-12 wild card win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

But before signing on Stroud making it two in a row versus a rival as an underdog, we have to put things in perspective.

The Bolts had a sweet 6-0 lead until the wheels fell off.

Once those wheels disintegrated, Justin Herbert could do nothing right.

Herbert threw 4 interceptions and the Chargers had turnover after turnover.

Stroud faces a much taller task against the well-rested KC defense this weekend.

The Chiefs are a solid -7.5 favorite.

It’s difficult to argue against those odds because Stroud must still go to the Nico Collins well and unlike the Chargers, Steve Spagnuolo is going to find a way to contain Collins.

Also, Joe Mixon won’t have the truck sized holes to run through against the Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes has his full arsenal.

DeAndre Hopkins, Hollywood Brown, Travis Kelce, Isaiah Pacheco and Xavier Worthy are all healthy.

So is the KC offensive line.

The Magic One outduels Stroud in a game that the Chiefs win and cover.

NFL Divisional Round QB Pick: Patrick Mahomes

Baltimore – Lamar Jackson at Buffalo – Josh Allen

AFC Divisional Round QB Matchups / Sunday, January 19th, 2025

The two best quarterbacks in the NFL this season go head-to-head in what should be a fantastic matchup.

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills dominated the Denver Broncos 31-7 in their wild card matchups while Lamar and the Ravens beat the rival Pittsburgh Steelers 28-14.

Allen threw for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns. He had his way with a decent Denver defense.

But Josh also ran for 46 yards from 8 carries.

Lamar tossed 2 touchdowns and passed for 175 yards.

Jackson also rushed for 81 yards from 15 carries.

Both quarterbacks are going to use their legs in this.

Both will have success throwing the football.

The difference, though, is that Allen is going to have to do more in this game than he did in the win over the Broncos.

James Cook is a good running back.

But he’s not Derrick Henry.

Henry takes a lot of pressure off Jackson.

If Henry has a decent game, and he should, Lamar is going to have to do less even though the Ravens win the game.

Expect a massive performance from both quarterbacks.

But in the end, because he doesn’t have a running back the caliber of future hall of famer Derrick Henry, the Buffalo quarterback posts the better stats even though his team could lose straight up.

NFL Divisional Round QB Pick: Josh Allen

Washington – Jayden Daniels at Philadelphia Jalen Hurts

NFC Divisional Round QB Matchups / Saturday, January 18th, 2025

The Philadelphia Eagles used a stifling defense and fantastic play from Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley to put the clamps on Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers in an impressive 22-10 wild card win.

Although the Eagles didn’t score more than 22, the victory was ultra impressive because of how Hurts managed the game.

Jalen didn’t post tremendous stats. He didn’t have to.

Instead, he took his time, picked his spots and got the job done.

This weekend, Hurts may have to air it out because he faces a familiar foe, the Washington Commanders.

Jayden Daniels and the Commanders won a tight game versus Bakery Mayfield and the Bucs.

How tight? The reason the Commanders take on the Eagles is because the last second field goal hit the post and then went through the uprights.

There’s a chance we see a shootout this weekend.

If a shootout happens, we should expect Hurts to get the upper hand versus Daniels.

The reason Washington rallied to beat the Eagles in the second game this season is because Jalen got hurt.

A healthy Jalen means the Eagles win and cover and Hurts beats Daniels in the stats department.

NFL Divisional Round QB Pick: Jalen Hurts

LAR – Matthew Stafford / Minnesota – Sam Darnold at Detroit – Jared Goff

NFC Divisional Round QB Matchups / Sunday, January 19th, 2025

The Rams and Vikings play in Arizona on Monday Night Football.

So at the time of this writing, we don’t know exactly which team and quarterback faces off against the Detroit Lions and Jared Goff.

As far as QB matchups are concerned, it doesn’t matter.

Whether it is Darnold or Staff, Goff wins the matchups.

If it was any other NFL season, if Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson didn’t have the seasons they had, Goff would be the MVP.

He plays for the team with the best record in the league.

He threw for 4,629 yards and 37 TDs to just 12 interceptions.

Goff has a plethora of weapons including the best pass catching running back in the NFL, Jahmyr Gibbs.

Goff is going to post monster stats against either the Rams or the Vikings.

But if you go against Goff, only do so if plays Stafford and the Rams.

The Rams D has been excellent in recent games and Staff has as many weapons.

So Stafford could eke out a victory.

NFL Divisional Round QB Pick: Jared Goff

2024 NFL Divisional Round Quarterback Matchups Predictions

Previous Betting News

We are down to 8 teams left with a chance to win the Super Bowl, with that number set to be cut in half after we have the Divisional Round this coming weekend. MyBookie Sportsbook 2024 NFL Divisional Round Quarterback Matchups

The teams that make it to this stage of the playoff proceedings are obviously talented, but as we have seen in the past, it’s the teams that have an elite QB that tend to go all the way and hoist the Lombardi Trophy. The question you have to ask yourself now, is which of the remaining 8 teams have a QB that can be classed as elite. Some are obvious, while others are on the fence or still so early in their career that it’s tough to make that kind of statement. We thought it might be fun to look at the QB matchups for all the Divisional Round games, so let’s dive in to include in your NFL betting plans.

Saturday Matchups

Houston at Baltimore
CJ Stroud Vs Lamar Jackson

For me, this is one of the more intriguing matchups of the 4 that we have coming our way this weekend. In Stroud, we have a rookie that is showing early signs of being an elite franchise QB. With Jackson, we have a player that has dominated proceedings in the regular season, but who has failed to deliver the goods in the playoffs.

The thing with Stroud in his rookie season is that he has not really made the mistakes that we usually see out of first year QBs. He threw for 23 TD versus just 5 INT in the regular season, while completing just shy of 64% of his passes. Stroud tossed for over 4,100 yards, but his QBR if 57.5 was in the middle of the pack. He did play against the Ravens D this season, throwing for 242 yards, with 0 TD and 0 INT. In his lone postseason game, he threw for 274 yards, with 3 TD and 0 INT.

It’s impossible to compare passings yards with Stroud and Jackson, as they are very different QBs. Jackson is a dual-threat guy who can hurt you in a variety of different ways, but that has not really translated well to the postseason. He was not very good in his earlier meeting with the Texans this season, throwing fir just 169 yards, with 0 TD and 1 INT. Until I see Jackson regularly deliver in the playoffs, I’ll have a hard time tagging him as a potential Super Bowl winner.

Green Bay at San Francisco
Jordan Love Vs Brock Purdy

Just a couple of seasons ago, the idea of these two going head-to-head in a playoff game would have seemed ridiculous. Love was on the bench watching Aaron Rodgers win multiple MVPs. When Rodgers moved to the Jets, Love got his shot. In San Francisco, Purdy was a 3rd of 4th string guy pressed into action due to injuries. Both have seized their opportunities.

Love has had a stellar first season as a starter, throwing for over 4,100 yards, with 32 TD and 11 INT. He is top 10 in QBR and is pretty much the same across the board in all the major QB stats. There were some concerns about him doing the business in the postseason, but he put that to bed with a great showing against the Cowboys, throwing for 272 yards and 3 TD versus 0 INT.

The stats of Love and Purdy are actually quite similar, but the main difference is that this is Purdy’s second time in the playoffs, taking the 49ers to the Conference Championship last season. He threw for 4,280 yards this season, with 31 TD versus 11 INT, His QBR of 72.7 was the best in the league. You look at these two guys and you see the potential for a shootout.

Sunday Matchups

Tampa Bay at Detroit
Baker Mayfield Vs Jared Goff

At the start of this piece, we spoke about the elite status of the QBs in the playoffs. I’m not sure that many people would have either of these guys in the elite group, but you cannot discount what they have done to get their respective teams to this stage in the postseason, so let’s take a closer look at the stats.

Baker Mayfield’s time in Cleveland came to an unceremonious end, which was followed by a disastrous time with the Carolina Panthers. He came back to life in LA with the Rams and has been excellent for the Bucs this season, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 28 TD versus 10 INT. In previous meetings with Detroit, he has thrown for 206 yards and 0 TD. He was, though, outstanding last week against the Eagles, throwing for over 300 yards and 3 TD passes.

Much like Mayfield, Goff has had an up and down career, with a promising start in LA fizzling out in the end. He had a stellar regular season, finishing 2nd overall in passing yards with 4,575 yards. He threw 30 TDs versus 12 INTs, with his 60.3 QBR putting him just outside the top 10. He has been good against Tampa, too, and also had a good showing in the Wild Card win over the Rams last weekend.

Kansas City at Buffalo
Patrick Mahomes Vs Josh Allen

I think we can all agree that when it comes to these two QBs, we are talking about players that are definitely on an elite level. Mahomes has little else left to prove after winning championships and MVPs, while Allen probably needs to win a title to be on the same level as his opposing QB this weekend. When these two go head-head, though, we always seem to see the best out of both.

You could argue that, by his lofty standards, Mahomes had a bit of a down year. He threw for 4,183 yards, tossing 27 TD versus 14 INT, with that latter number a lot higher than what we are used to seeing from Mahomes. He was still in the top 10 with a QBR of 63.0, but he did have a better performance last weekend versus the Dolphins in less-than-ideal conditions. While you can make a case for this being an off year for Mahomes, the results are proving to be the same.

It was much the same story for Allen, with the Bills failing to live up to expectations until the final few weeks of the regular season, which was when the light seemed to go on and business as usual returned. Allen threw for 4,306 yards, with 29 TD and 18 INT, which, like Mahomes, was an unexpectedly high number. He was outstanding last week versus the Steelers, tossing 3 TD passes in a rout. This, for me, is the QB matchup of the weekend.
