The PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship gets underway on Thursday at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida. It’s the Tour’s last stop on its Florida swing and one of the few non-designated events in March and April. As a result, the $8 million prize purse is much lower than the $20 million plus that has been awarded in recent events, but there’s still a surprisingly decent field in Florida this weekend.

Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth headline the field, which also includes 2022 U.S. Open winner Matthew Fitzpatrick and two-time defending Valspar champion Sam Burns Here’s a look at some of the favorites and the best-value longshot pick.

The Favorite – Justin Thomas +1025

Thomas isn’t playing the best golf of his career by any stretch, but he has the best name value in the tournament. It’s not surprising that he’s considered the betting favorite yet, while he has a legitimate chance to win, it just doesn’t feel as though he has the necessary momentum right now.

Thomas had to grind to a T60 finish at the PLAYERS last weekend and barely made the cut. He was T21 at the Arnold Palmer and T20 at the Genesis Open. Outside of a fourth-place finish at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, it’s been a relatively disastrous year for Thomas thus far. 

He does, however, have a history of playing well at Innisbrook. He finished T3 in last year’s event and T21 two years ago. Thomas ranks sixth among all players in this year’s field in average adjusted strokes-gained at the course at +1.71.

The Smart Pick – Keegan Bradley +2100

Keegan Bradley always seems to be in contention, and that’s especially true at Innisbrook. Although he doesn’t always finish well; Bradley was the first-round leader a few years back and missed the cut after a disastrous second round. He’s been T6 or better after the first round in five of his last six starts at Innisbrook and finished as runner-up in 2021. 

Bradley missed the cut at the PLAYERS, giving him added rest heading into this weekend. He finished T10 the week prior at the Arnold Palmer and was T20 at the Waste Management in February. Bradley has five career victories on the PGA Tour, including the ZOZO Championship in October 2022.

Longshot Pick – Justin Suh +3200

If you’re looking for a solid longshot option this weekend, there’s few better than Justin Suh. The 25-year-old USC alumnus has shown to be one of the better young players on the Tour this season with a pair of top-10 finishes, including a T6 at the PLAYERS last weekend.

Suh missed the cut in each of his first three events this season, but has since made the cut in 11 of 12 tournaments and recorded each of his top-10 results in his last three starts.

What a long and brutal week in Ponte Verde, Florida, for The Players Championship. Between rain and cold weather to sunshine and high winds, the players experienced it all at TPC Sawgrass. In the end, Cameron Smith walked out a winner at -13 on the week. 

Looking ahead at this week at Innisbrook Resort and the Copperhead course, there are a few names that stand out right away when looking at the field. Let’s take a look at some of our PGA Tour Betting favorites for the week and a few players to look out for this week. 

Golf Betting Preview for 2022 PGA Tour Valspar Championship

Sam Burns +2200

We start our list with the defending champion at Copperhead, Sam Burns. Burns won a cool $1.2 million for his 17 underperformance last year.

If he were to win again this week, it would be the second time in recent years that we have seen a back-to-back champion at the Valspar. Paul Casey won the event in 2018 and 2019. 

Currently ranked 17th in the World Golf Rankings, Burns is coming off a tie for 26th finish at The Players Championship. It was not the best start to the season for Burns, with three straight missed cuts, but he has turned it around in his last two performances. He has a great chance to defend his title this week at Innisbrook. 

Paul Casey +2000

The two-time champion at the Valspar Championship and the back-to-back winner, Paul Casey, is set and ready for a good week at the Innisbrook Resort. Casey is coming off a great week at The Players Championship in tough conditions. Casey has not won on the PGA Tour since his 2019 win at the Valspar. 

Casey only has three starts this season on the PGA Tour. Last week he played at TPC Sawgrass and before that at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Genesis Invitational.

Paul Casey would be a good bet this week since he has won twice before at Innisbrook, and he is coming off a good week at The Players Championship. 

Justin Thomas +1000

The top favorite heading into the week, Justin Thomas, headlines the Valspar Championship. Last year, Thomas finished tied for 13th for the week at the Valspar. With Jim McKay as his caddie now, Thomas has turned his play around so far this season. 

Thomas did not have the greatest week at The Players Championship. He was the defending champion and finished the week tied for 33rd.

Currently ranked eighth in the world, Thomas is looking for his first win this season in the early stages. He has had at least one win on tour every year since 2014. 

Other names to watch

Collin Morikawa is the second favorite in terms of odds this week. Morikawa missed the cut last week at TPC Sawgrass. His odds are currently +1200. 

Viktor Hovland is another young gun that is ready to make a statement on the PGA Tour. Hovland finished tied for ninth last week at The Players Championship. His odds for the week are currently +1200 as well. 

Brooks Koepka has not had the best of starts to the season so far. Not only is Koepka trying to focus on golf, but he is getting married this year as well.

Trying to balance the two can be tough, as he missed the cut this last week in Ponte Verde. His odds for the week are at +2800.

In 11 events this season, the world No. 19 has made the cut each time out with four Top-10 finishes and one win in the Farmers Insurance Open in January. Reed finished a solid eighth in the Masters in his last event and has three Top-10 finishes, and two Top-5 finishes in this event. The last time Reed played this event in 2019, he failed to survive the cut, so the 30-year-old Texan will be hungry.

Justin Thomas

In 12 events this season, the world No. 2 has made the cut 11 times with five of Top-10 finishes and a win in the Players Championship in March. Thomas finished T21 in the 2021 Masters in his last event and now says he’s refreshed after a short break.

“I always try to take time off after Augusta, definitely one week off,” Thomas said. “I’m just not in the physical or mental state to be able to play a golf tournament after the grind the week of Augusta. Taking two weeks off was nice.”

Thomas ranks first in birdies per round (5.10) and has a T18 and a T10 finish in four career appearances in this event.

“I love this tournament,” he said. “I love this golf course. The golf course is right in front of you. It’s not anything that’s tricked up. It’s not anything that’s hidden. It’s all right there. You see the narrow fairway out there and you’ve got to hit it, and if you don’t, you get out of position, you’re really just trying to somehow make a par, and the greens are small and severe.

Dustin Johnson

In 10 events this season, the world No. 1 has made the cut nine times with six Top-25 finishes, four Top-10 finishes and one win in the 2020 Masters last November. Over his last five outings, Johnson has been all over the place with a missed cut in this year’s Masters three weeks ago and a T13 finish in the RBC Heritage two weeks back. Still, Johnson ranks ninth in driving distance and a stellar fourth in scoring average (69.8). Johnson is hungry right now and clearly wants to bag the win this weekend.

“It’s a nice trophy. I’d like to have it,” Johnson said during his pre-tournament interview on Wednesday. “It would look good on the shelf. I don’t know what it is, but it looks nice.”

Paul Casey

In 12 events this season, the world No. 44 has made the cut 11 times with a quartet of Top-10 finishes to his credit. Casey finished a respectable 26th in the Masters earlier this month, but missed the cut at the RBC Heritage just after that. Still, the 43-year-old is the two-time defending champ and knows this course extremely well. Casey is going for the three-peat, although it’s a very rare feat. Over the last 40 years, there have only been eight instances of a player winning a tournament three or more times in a row. The incomparable Tiger Woods did it six times.

“It would just be extremely cool, flat out. I think even more so with the gap, as well, with the one-year sort of hiatus,” said Casey, noting that last year’s Valspar had to be canceled after one round. “Yeah, it would just be very cool.”

Sungjae Im

In a whopping 21 events this season, the 23-year-old world No. 21 has a modest three Top-10 finishes. Im however, comes into this year’s Valspar Championship fresh off a 13th place finish in the RBC Heritage two weeks ago following his missed cut in the Masters. Im finished fourth in his first appearance in this tournament in 2019 and has four Top-25 finishes in his last five tournaments.

Okay golf betting enthusiasts, with the Players Championship in the rear-view mirror and the 2019 Masters quickly approaching, it’s time to take a look at the odds to win the star-studded 2019 Valspar Championship.

The PGA Tour will make its annual stop at the Copperhead Course at Innsbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla., beginning on Thursday and the field is loaded with possibilities. Dustin Johnson is the prohibitive favorite at 11-2 odds, with Jason Day and John Rahm both at 10-1 odds.

Sergio Garcia is a 16-1 pick and Paul Casey and Patrick Reed listed as identical 20-1 picks. Former major winners Bubba Watson (40-1) and Henrik Stenson (35-1) are among the long shots in the loaded field, so let’s find out who my top five picks to win this coming weekend are.

Dustin Johnson

The World No. 1 won the WGC-Mexico Championship at the end of February and finished a solid fifth at The Players Championship last weekend. Johnson ranks 24th in birdies per round (4.38) and 22nd in driving distance and has four Top 10 finishes in his last six events. Johnson is the favorite for a reason!

Gary Woodland

The World No. 4 has recorded an impressive half-dozen Top 10 finishes in his last 11 events while finishing inside the top 36 in each of his last five tournaments. Woodland, who hails from Orlando, won this event in 2011 and recorded a Top 10 finish in 2014 and that means he’s offering some great value entering this year’s event, even if the odds don’t necessarily reflect it.

John Rahm

Rahm finished 12t in last week’s Players Championship, but he’s also finished 12th or better in seven of his last eight events while recording six double-digit strokes under par in his last eight events. Could last week’s late collapse lead Rahm to greater heights this coming weekend? It’s quite possible, but there’s no doubt that Rahm is clearly talented enough to beat anyone on the planet every time he takes to a golf course.

Paul Casey

Casey might have failed to make the cut at last weekend’s Player’s Championship, but the sweet-swinging Englishman has finished T25 or better in each of his three previous events while recording a T3 at the WGC-Mexico Championships and second place finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in early February. In his last eight events, Casey has finished T25 or better an impressive six times. I’ loving the underrated Casey as a value-packed 20-1 pick and you should too.

Brandt Snedeker

Snedeker looks like a great longshot pick at +5000 seeing as how he’s is coming off a fifth place finish at The Players Championship and has made the cut in eight of his nine appearances at the Valspar Championship, including a pair of Top 10 finishes.

Lefty is taking a well-deserved break this week as the Tour returns to Florida – the Tampa Bay area to be more precise – for the Valspar Championship. The PGA odds favorite at our online sportsbook is the highest-ranked player in the field, American Jordan Spieth (+700).

It’s a big-time treat for those living in the Tampa Bay area as Tiger Woods will play the tournament for the first time – he’ll also play next week down the road in Orlando at Arnold Palmer’s event at Bay Hill. Because the Valspar is the week before that big tournament, the Valspar usually struggled to draw a great field.

But it’s an excellent one this year with five of the world’s Top 13. Rory McIlroy is also set to make his tournament debut, and Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, and Adam Scott are among the other big names in the field with Tiger. Simply because of Woods, Valspar organizers will open up two additional parking lots to handle 5,000 to 6,000 more spots.

Perhaps not everyone is happy about Woods playing here. Jonathan Randolph, the 266th-ranked player in the world, would have had a place in the Valspar Championship, but Woods’ decision meant Randolph’s spot was no more. Woods is still able to pick and choose which Tour events he enters because he has a high ranking on the PGA Tour priority list. Tiger has previously played at Innisbrook – at the 1996 JC Penney Mixed Team event when he was paired with former U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Kelli Kuehne.

Woods has made three starts in the 2017-18 PGA Tour season, including a tie for 12th in his last start at The Honda Classic. That’s his best result on Tour since a T-10 at the 2015 Wyndham Championship.

What’s Interesting About This Court?

Copperhead is an unusual Florida style course in that it’s very hilly and tree-lined – like you would find in the Midwest or Northeast. It’s a par 71 measuring 7,340 yards. Two of Copperhead’s par-5s feature double doglegs, putting a premium on positioning to reach the green in two. It’s best known for the “Snake Pit,” two bruising par-4s sandwiched around the 215-yard 17^th. The “Snake Pit” ranked No. 4 once again among last year’s toughest three-hole closing stretches, averaging .472 strokes over par. Two years ago, the course underwent an extension renovation in which the fairways were changed to Celebration Bermudagrass and the greens were switched to TifEagle Bermuda.

The defending champion is Canadian Adam Hadwin, and it remains his lone victory. On Sunday a year ago, Hadwin lost a two-shot lead with one swing on the 16th hole when his tee shot sailed into the water and led to double bogey. Hadwin kept his wits and closed with two pars, the final one good enough for a one-shot victory over Patrick Cantlay.

Cantlay came up well short and missed his 15-foot par putt to force a playoff. Hadwin ranked second in strokes gained: approach-the-green (SGATG), fifth in strokes gained: tee-to-green (SGTTG) and fourth in strokes gained: putting (SGP), while also ranking T-5 in greens in regulation (GIR) and fifth in proximity to hole. Statistically, iron play (GIR, SGATG, proximity) is big this week, as is positioning off the tee, par-5 scoring and par-3 scoring. Hadwin has racked up three top-10 finishes in his last five starts, including a T-9 finish last week in Mexico, and seems poised to make a strong title defense.

How Well Has the Favorite Done in this Event?

Spieth won here in 2015 at 10 under, beating Sean O’Hair and Patrick Reed in a playoff. Spieth hasn’t finished worse than 20^th in his career at this tournament.

McIlroy is a +1200 second-favorite. He has struggled on the PGA Tour this season after back-to-back Top 3s in the Middle East to start 2018 on the European Tour. Rose and Garcia at +1600. Rose won three times internationally to close 2017, but his T-37 finish in Mexico City last week was his worst finish since MC at PGA Championship. Garcia was T7 last week in Mexico. Sergio hasn’t played here since 2013.

Expert 2018 Valspar Championship Betting Prediction

Let’s go with Sweden’s Henrik Stenson at +1800. This is a ball-striker’s course and Stenson is the consummate iron specialist. He hasn’t won here yet but has been no worse than T11 in three trips.
