Reed shared the lead after the opening round and closed out the tournament with a 4-under, 68 on Sunday.

The winner of the Farmers Insurance Open receives 500 FedEx Cup points. The tournament purse is $8.4 million of the total $1.512 million going to the winner. 

About the Golf Courses

Torrey Pines Golf Course is a 36-hole municipal golf facility that is owned and operated by the City of San Diego. The facility opened in 1957 and sits along the cliffs with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The South Course has hosted a pair of U.S. Open in 2008 and 2021.

Both the North and South Courses were originally designed by William F. Bell. The South Course was redesigned by Rees Jones in 2001, while the North Course underwent a redesign by Tom Weiskopf in 2016. Other players inside the top 10 set to tee it up include Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Xander Shauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, and Hideki Matsuyama. Matsuyama currently leads the FedEx Cup after securing a pair of victories already this season.

There is no shortage of firepower outside the top 10, with Brooks Koepka, Jordan Speith, Billy Horschel, Jason Day, and Justin Rose in the field. Reigning PGA Championship winner and long-time San Diego resident Phil Mickelson returns to action after hosting last week’s American Express.

Farmers Insurance Open Betting Favorites

Rahm (+750) is again the betting favorite after being the favored player for the American Express last week. Rahm has had a history of success at Torrey Pines, winning this tournament in 2017, runner-up in 2020, a T7 last season, and winning the U.S. Open at Torrey later in the summer.

Thomas (+1200), Schauffele (+1600), Matsuyama (+2000), Johnson (+2000), and DeChambeau (+2000) round out the top players. Thomas already has a solo third and a pair of T5’s in tournaments played this year. Johnson returns to the course for the first time since a T45 at THE CJ CUP @ SUMMIT in mid-October.

If you are looking past the chalk, the defending champion Reed can be had at +5000. California native Max Homa (+7000) can’t be ignored, with a T9 and T18 in his last two starts at the Famers. 

Francesco Molinari is another darkhorse at +7500 a T6 last weekend and T13 at the U.S. Open. Hudson Swafford (+12500) aims for his second victory in a row after nabbing his third PGA Tour victory last weekend.

While the 40-year-old Tennessee native is ranked just 103rd in the official golf world rankings, I like Brandt Snedeker as a long sot pick because of his past success at Torrey Pines. The nine-time PGA tour winner might have claimed his last tour win in 2018 in the Wyndham Championship, but Snedeker won this event in 2021 and 2016 while finishing second in 2010 and 2013. In his 2016 victory, Snedeker played one of the greatest final rounds in tournament history, shooting a three-under 69 while playing in heavy rain and winds that gusted to 45 mph. His last 17 holes were bogey-free and I think his mastery of this course will give him a shot at the very least.

Jason Day

43rd in the official golf world rankings, the 33-year-old Australian has been all over the map to start his 2020-21 campaign. Day finished T38 at the US Open in September before missing the cut at the Shriners Open in early October. Day withdrew from the CJ Cup a week later before finishing T60 at the Zozo Championship to close out October. Day then finished T7 at the Vivint Houston Open, before missing the cut at the Masters by shooting a second round 78. Day then finished an encouraging T12 at the RSM Classic in November and will make his first appearance of the 2021 calendar year at Torrey Pines. Day won this event in 2015 and 2018 while finishing T2 in 2014. Day ranks 53rd in driving distance (303.0) and 43rd in scoring average (70.3).

Adam Scott

23rd in the official golf world rankings, the 40-year-old Australian has been a pillar of consistency since the start of the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. In five events, Scott has one Top 25 finish, but five finishes inside the Top 45 including his T41 in the Sony Open in Hawaii two weeks ago. Scott finished second in this event in 2019 and ranks 41st in driving distance (312.1), 48th in birdie average (4.35) and 57th in scoring average (70.5) Maybe it’s e, but I think Scott has the look of a good long shot pick this coming weekend.

Sungjae Im

17th in the official golf world rankings, the 22-year-old South Korean looks like a great pick to get the outright win at Torrey Pines. Im has played a whopping 11 events this season while recording five Top 25 finishes and two Top 10 finishes including a T2 finish in last year’s Masters in November. Im finished T12 at last week’s American Express while shooting three rounds in the 60s. Im is seeking his second PGA Tour win following his 2020 victory at the Honda Classic and I believe he could get it.

Jon Rahm

Second in the official golf world rankings, the 26-year-old Spaniard has been fantastic since the start of the new season. In five events, Rahm has recorded five Top 25 finishes while finishing T17 in each of his last four events. Rahm comes into the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open fresh off a pair of identical T7 finishes at the Masters and the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Jan. 10. Rahm ranks 25th in driving distance (307.2) while ranking sixth in eagles per hole (60.0) and 17th in scoring average (69.9). Rahm won this event in 2017 and finished second to Marc Leishman lat year, one stroke back. Rahm is my pick t win and cash in this coming weekend.

Tiger has won the Farmers Insurance Open, formerly known as the Buick Invitational, 7 times in 12 tournaments played. He finished in the Top 5 four other times. It means that Woods hasn’t finished out of the Top 5 in 12 Famers Insurance Open Tournaments. He’s not only the pick ahead of Rose, Schauffele, and Matsuyama, he’s the overall pick to win this week.

What are the two best golfers to consider backing at odds of +2500 to +5500?

Jason Day shot a -14 at the 2019 Famers Insurance Open. Although he hasn’t hit the ball well this PGA Season, he could turn his form around here. Also, consider Jordan Spieth.

We might as well throw Jason Day in this group. Day’s odds are at +1600, but he won the 2018 Famers Insurance Open in a multi-hole playoff over Alexander Noren and Ryan Palmer. Day shot a -10 overall and should have no trouble hitting the ball over Torrey Pines North and Torrey Pines South.

Although Day will hit the ball well, 2019 could be Jon Rahm’s breakout year. The 24-year-old had a decent 2018. So far, his 2019 has been stellar. He followed up his win in the Hero World Challenge with Top 10 finishes in both the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the Desert Classic.

Of the Top 4 golfers, consider grabbing the chalk.

Of the +2000 or less choices, who figures to be in the running on Sunday?

If we leave Jason Day out of the mix, all 4 +1800 to +2000 golfers have a shot to win. Tony Finau shot a -7 at last year’s Farmers Insurance Open while Marc Leishman shot a -6. This season, Xander Shauffele already has 2 wins from 4 tournaments played. He took home the WGC-HSBC Champions with a -14 before shooting a -23 to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Then there’s Tiger Woods. The Great One shot a -3 at the 2018 Farmers Insurance Open. That’s not bad. It was also before he had started hitting the ball really well with the new swing. Tiger could surprise. If he wins, this might be the last time we can back Woods at those big odds.

Which +2500 to +5000 golfer looks like a possible 2019 Farmers Insurance Open winner?

Keegan Bradley hasn’t hit the ball well in his last couple of tournaments. Before finishing 29^th at the Sony Open in Hawaii and 27^th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, he had scored a decent 15^th at the Hero World Challenge. His 6^th place finish at the WGC-HSBC Champions was also a decent showing.

Bradley finished 5^th at last year’s Farmers Insurance Open after a -8. His form could definitely return at Torrey Pines. There’s nothing wrong with the +5000 odds, either.

Is there a golfer not listed at over +5000 who can win the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open?

Hideki Matsuyama’s yet to get going. The guess here’s that it’s only a matter of time. He’s offering +6600 odds to win the Farmers Insurance Open. Last year, he shot a -5, good enough for a 12^th place finish.

If he puts it together this week, Hideki could take the trophy at massive odds. He’s worth a look as a flyer.
