College Basketball Betting Analysis: Michigan
No. 21 Michigan (14-1, 6-1 Big Ten) avoided a home upset vs. Northwestern on Sunday, winning 80-76 in overtime. After Roddy Gayle gave the Wolverines a 65-63 lead with 34 seconds left in regulation, Matthew Nicholson made two free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining to send it to overtime. Michigan made 9 of 10 free throws in the final 1:20 of OT to finish off the Wildcats. UM won despite shooting a season-worst 36% percent. The game saw 68 free throw attempts and 46 personal fouls (more than one per minute.
Vladislav Goldin
FAU transfer Goldin led all scorers with 31 points, including a career-high 10 free throw makes on 10-for-12 shooting from the line. The 7-footer has been producing at an entirely different level the past few weeks. Goldin was slow out of the gates, scoring in single digits in five of his first six games, averaging just 7.7 points and 4.7 rebounds over that stretch. But he hasn’t scored fewer than 11 points since then, averaging 20.8 points and 6.8 rebounds over his last 12 games, shooting better than 67% from the field and blocking nearly two shots per game.

Nimari Burnett
Burnett also reached double figures, totaling 13 points and six rebounds. Roddy Gayle Jr. scored 10 points, four of which came in overtime. Tre Donaldson added 10 points and four assists, while Danny Wolf chipped in 13 rebounds. The Wolverines have started the season 9-0 at home for the first time since the 2020-21 season, when U-M rattled off 12 straight wins at Crisler.
Dusty May
Coach May wasn’t thrilled with the result, especially on the boards, as Michigan was outrebounded by two against a smaller opponent: “Our rebounding has to improve. We’ve gotta find ways to be more disruptive on the defensive end. We’ve had to force a few more turnovers to try to find some easy baskets. But offensively, just playing, we have to screen better, we have to cut better. Most of us hadn’t been in the Big Ten for a long time. So there are certain things that you just, you forget. But we have to play with much more physicality in our league. We have to adjust to the game better. And so we can’t get knocked off our screens.”
All five Michigan starters average in double figures: Goldin (16.4), Donaldson (12.6), Wolf (12.5), Gayle Jr. (11.8) and Burnett (10.7). They have started 17-of-18 games. Goldin’s 64.6% from the field ranks eighth nationally and third in the Big Ten behind Indiana’s Oumar Ballo (66.9 percent) and Iowa’s Owen Freeman (64.9 percent).
Danny Wolf
With 11 double-digit rebounding games, Wolf ranks 12th nationally and second in the Big Ten behind Indiana‘s Oumar Ballo (10.3 rpg). With eight double-doubles, Wolf is second in the Big Ten behind Northwestern’s Brooks Barnhizer (9). Burnett (38) and Donaldson (33) lead U-M from long range. Burnett has a three-pointer in seven straight and produced 20 of his 38 during the stretch.
Michigan and Purdue play for the 18th time when both are ranked. The last ranked vs. ranked game was in 2018 when No. 7 U-M defeated No. 19 Purdue, 76- 57, at Crisler (Dec. 1). Overall, U-M holds an 8-9 record when both are ranked.

College Basketball Betting Analysis: Purdue
No. 11 Purdue (15-5, 7-2 Big Ten) had a seven-game winning streak snapped in a 73-70 home upset loss to Ohio State on Tuesday. Micah Parrish scored 17 of his career-high 22 points in the second half, helping Ohio State rally from a 16-point first-half deficit and fueling a 15-0 run in the closing minutes. Trey Kaufman-Renn scored eight straight to get Purdue within 68-67 with 1:01 left, but the Boilermakers never retook the lead. Ohio State shot 53.3% from the field and 47.8% on 3s.
The Streak
The loss snapped Purdue’s 26-game homecourt winning streak and ended the Boilermakers’ 14-game Big Ten homecourt winning streak. The streak had been the second longest in Mackey Arena history. The game was the 700th coaching game of Matt Painter’s career, now with a 487-213 record in his 21st season. He is 462-208 in 20 seasons at Purdue. It snapped a 12-game winning streak in the month of January.
3 Pointers
Purdue went just 3-of-9 from 3-point range and is 8-of-34 (.235) from 3-point range in the last three games. Purdue has made 3 or fewer 3-pointers in each of the last three games. Ohio State became the first team to crack 70 points against Purdue since Dec. 16, 2024 (Auburn) – a span of eight games. The Boilers fell to 234-21 under Painter when shooting at least 48 percent from the field, lost for the first time in the last 24 games when having fewer turnovers than its opponent, and had a 36-game winning streak end when leading at halftime.

Matt Painter
“Obviously, the first five minutes of the second half, they went on that run and (we) got a little impatient offensively. A big part of the game is finishing the (first) half and then starting the second half,” Painter said. “We messed up our assignment at the end of the first half, didn’t do what we were supposed to and give up a three. And then we fall down to start the second half and give up another three. So, now they’ve got it to 10 instead of it being at 16.”
Trey Kaufman-Renn
Kaufman-Renn tied a career high with 26 points, grabbing seven rebounds with two assists. He went 11-of-16 from the field. But star Braden Smith was just 3 of 14 from the field and scored 12. Smith is the only player in America with 275 points, 150 assists and 75 rebounds. He is on pace to become the first player since Loyola Marymount‘s Terrell Lowery (1990-91) to average 15.0 points, 9.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and shoot over 40.0 percent from 3-point range. Smith leads the Big Ten in both assists (8.9) and steals per game (2.3). Mike Conley Jr. (OSU; 2007) is the only Big Ten player to do that.
Friday’s game marks the 500th Big Ten Conference game played in Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers are 388-111 (.778) against Big Ten teams at Mackey Arena. Painter has accounted for a 142-36 (.798) record against Big Ten teams in Mackey Arena. Since the turn of the calendar to January, Purdue ranks No. 6 nationally in efficiency behind Houston, Duke, Auburn, Illinois and Iowa State. The Boilermakers are 14th in offensive efficiency and 13th in defensive efficiency in that span.
