Indiana Basketball Analysis
Could Coach Mike Woodson be fired after this season? There were chants of “Fire Woodson” during Tuesday’s 94-69 home loss to No. 19 Illinois. There is no shame losing to the Illini, but Indiana was down 30 in the first half. It marked IU’s second straight 25-point loss and was its second-worst loss in program history. Only a 32-point loss to Wisconsin in 2010 was worse.
Should be worse. This is a guy who fired the best coach on his staff. Mike Davis at least made it to a National Championship game. I’d take Davis over Woodson any day of the week. https://t.co/caVWsiTPsy

Indiana has now lost six conference games by 20 points or more during Woodson’s tenure including their two most recent games. Following an 85-60 last Saturday night loss at Iowa, it left the Hoosiers searching for answers.
Luke Goode
“We’re not playing tough enough,” forward Goode said. “We have to be ready, stick to the game plan and the scouting report. We let teams punk us. We have to be better. We have to take pride in what we do. It all comes down to defense. We need to have the pride to grind out games.”
Oumar Ballo
Center Ballo led IU with 16 points and 15 rebounds. He scored in double figures for the fifth-straight game. It’s his longest stretch of consecutive contests with 10+ points (5) since doing so 10 times between January 27th and March 2nd in 2024 at Arizona. Ballo recorded his 39th career double-double and his fifth of the season. He’s had a double-double in four of the last five Big Ten contests.
Goode, who played his first three seasons at Illinois, fouled out with 13 points. Since Goode was inserted into the starting lineup against Winthrop on Dec. 29. He has averaged 10.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He has knocked down 13-of-32 (40.6%) from behind the arc in his new role. Goode has posted at least eight points in five of his six appearances in the starting lineup. He has made at least one 3-point field goal as a starter.
The Key Players
Guard Myles Rice had 12 points and fellow guard Trey Galloway had 10 points and five assists in the defeat. Indiana played without forward Malik Reneau for a fifth straight game and he’s iffy for Friday. Reneau is averaging 14.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists this season and Goode has been starting for him.
Since Reneau’s injury, Ballo has averaged 18.2 points and 12.2 rebounds on 37-of-57 (64.9%) shooting from the floor as he has become the primary big man. On the year, Ballo is one of four high-major conference players (Johni Broome, Auburn; Hunter Dickinson, Kansas; Danny Wolf, Michigan) to average a double-double and 1.5 blocked shots per night, and the only player to post those numbers on 60.0% shooting or better.
Myles Rice
Over his last eight games, Rice has averaged 14.4 points and shot 89.7% (35-of-39) from the free throw line. He has added 3.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per contest during the stretch. Rice is one of 12 players in the Big Ten Conference to average at least 12.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per contest.
The Hoosiers have lost 13 games by 15 or more points in 32 conference games under Woodson. He was asked how to explain allowing 60 first-half points to Illinois and trailing by 28 at the break, the school’s largest halftime deficit in 25 years.
Mike Woodson
“I wish I knew,” Woodson said. “I thought we played better in the second half. They scored, what, 34 points in the second half. 60 points is … it’s just way too many. You know, I just thought our defense and our intensity just wasn’t there and they exploited it. … We can’t let this be a snowball effect. There’s a long way to go. I think we’re good enough to win. I’ve got to get us to believe that.”
Woodson, who played at Indiana under legendary coach Bob Knight before his NBA career, was hired to replace Archie Miller in 2021. He holds a 76-45 overall record and reached the NCAA Tournament in his first two seasons. However, the Hoosiers missed the Dance last season after going just 19-14. There was speculation that Indiana would fire him last season, but it opted to bring him back for another shot. While the Hoosiers are a solid 13-5, they are just 1-5 in Quad 1 games and haven’t really beaten anybody.

Ohio State Basketball Analysis
Ohio State also enters on a two-game slide after a 70-68 loss at No. 24 Wisconsin on Tuesday. OSU trailed 37-20 at the half but cut it to 65-64 on Micah Parrish’s layup with 16 seconds left before John Tonje helped the Badgers stay ahead from the foul line. Up two points with just 1.6 seconds to play, Carter Gilmore’s tight defense forced an out-of-bounds turnover on Ohio State’s inbound play, taking away any last-chance shot opportunities. The Buckeyes have lost three of their last four by a combined 11 points.

After shooting just 32 percent in the first half and committing nine turnovers, OSU played way cleaner in the second half, committing just two turnovers and shooting over 51 percent. Bruce Thornton scored 19 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as the Buckeyes outscored Wisconsin 48-33 in the second 20 minutes. The Buckeyes are now 1-3 in January this year and 4-13 in the month over the past three years.
Jake Diebler
“You have to give coach [Greg] Gard and Wisconsin a lot of credit,” OSU coach Diebler said. “I think they’re a really good team. I think they’re a top-20-caliber team. And this is obviously a really tough place to play. So, I’m proud of our fight in the second half. The adjustments we made. Against a veteran team, on the road, dug too big of a hole that we couldn’t quite overcome. I thought we showed great fight and toughness. And played much more like what we’re capable of there in the second half.”
The Stats
Ohio State has shot 50 percent or better in a game nine times this season. The Buckeyes shot 50 percent of better just eight times all of last season. And four of those eight times came after Diebler became the interim coach. The Buckeyes are shooting 48.6 percent overall on the year, which is fifth in the Big Ten and 32nd nationally.
Bruce Thornton
For the year, Thornton is averaging 17.4 points and 4.4 assists per game. He’s also shooting 53.1 percent from the floor and 43.3 percent from long range. Only three Buckeyes have averaged 17 or more points in a season over the last 12 seasons.
Sean Stewart
Stewart has played well as of late and most of his impact has been felt on the glass. He has averaged 7.4 rebounds per game over the last five games. Freshman big man Ivan Njegovan has played in just nine games but Tuesday at Wisconsin was his most impactful game. With the other Buckeye big men in foul trouble, he stepped in and played a season-high 10:51 and finished with five points and a season-high five rebounds.
John Mobley Jr.
Freshman Mobley Jr. is 37-of-86 from long range this season. He is seventh in the Big Ten with 37 threes and ninth at 2.18 three-pointers per game. He has made at least one three-pointer in every game and three or more in seven games. The OSU freshman record for threes in a season is 95 set by D’Angelo Russell in 2015.
OSU has made at least one three-point field goal in 358 consecutive games. The last time the Buckeyes failed to make a three-pointer was on March 2, 2014, when they were 0-for-11 in a 72-64 loss at Indiana. Five times during the streak the Buckeyes have had just one three-pointer in a game.
^Indiana vs Ohio State Series History
They are scheduled to play twice this season and did last season with IU winning both. The game in Columbus was 76-73. Malik Reneau and Trey Galloway combined for 51 points, Anthony Leal scored the last five points and Indiana rallied from an 18-point deficit. Jamison Battle and Roddy Gayle Jr. each scored 19 points to lead Ohio State. Indiana leads all-time 112-88 and has won four of the past five.

Why Bet on Ohio State?
Ohio State (9-2, 3-0 Big Ten) is off an 87-79 overtime win at Nebraska on Sunday. Freshman Malaki Branham, who had scored in double figures just once in his first 10 games, had a season-high 35 points. Branham set the Ohio State record for points by a freshman in a Big Ten game, and he tied for second-best freshman scoring performance in the nation this season. Branham entered the night with just five three-pointers on the season. He made three of his first four finished 6-of-10. This was the first game this season with multiple three-pointers for Branham.
“I kind of built my confidence after I hit those first couple,” said Branham, who finished 13 for 19. “They told me to keep shooting, so that’s what I did.”
Jamari Wheeler made three of his four three-pointers in the final 30 seconds of regulation and overtime. He finished 4-of-5 from deep and had a season-high 16 points. Star E.J. Liddell battled a tough shooting night but made two clutch free throws to tie the game with nine seconds left in regulation. He ended the night with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Liddell is the only player in the country with season averages of 19.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 3.0 assists.
The Buckeyes made a season-high 16 three-pointers, marking their sixth game this season with 10 or more threes. The 16 threes are fourth-most in a game in program history. Ohio State is shooting 48.9 percent from the floor which is second in the conference and in the Top 15 nationally.
Ohio State’s Justice Sueing (abdominal) and Seth Towns (back) will not play on Thursday per Coach Chris Holtmann. Sueing has only appeared in two games this season after averaging 10.7 PPG and 5.5 RPG a year ago. Towns has yet to play this year.
Why Bet on Indiana?
Indiana (10-3, 1-2 Big Ten) lost 61-58 at Penn State on Jan. 2. The Hoosiers answered with nine straight points to cut the deficit to a point after Rob Phinisee made back-to-back baskets. Jalen Pickett ended the drought when he hit a 3-pointer with 5:32 remaining and Penn State held on.
The Hoosiers lost the rebound battle by 10 (39-29) and the three-point-shooting battle by seven (11 baskets to 4). Indiana has lost three road games by two (in overtime), by five and by three. IU, which entered the game shooting 37 percent from three-point range, was just 4-for-17 (23.5 percent).
