March Madness Possible Title Matches: The 2024 NCAA Tournament is on a break ahead of the start of the Sweet 16 on Thursday.

It has been a very chalk Big Dance through two rounds with just a single double-digit seed left in No. 11 NC State of the ACC but all four No. 1 seeds and No. 2 seeds still standing. Here’s a look at some likely national title matchups.

No. 1 UConn vs. No. 1 Houston

The Huskies remain +210 favorites to repeat as national champions and Houston is a +600 second favorite to win it all for the first time. UConn has easily beaten its first two opponents in this Dance. Center Donovan Clingan (16.5 PPG, 11.0 RPG, 8 blocks total, 78% clip from the field in the NCAA tournament) He has been a two-way force for Dan Hurley’s squad in this tournament so far. Purdue star center Zach Edey is the only player in America more impactful than Clingan when he’s on the court. The Huskies have won eight straight NCAA Tournament games dating to last season by at least 13 points. That’s a record.

Houston, like UConn, spent quite a bit of time at No. 1 in the polls this season. The Cougars were pushed to the limit in the Round of 32 by No. 9 seed Texas A&M with UH escaping in OT. The Aggies forced overtime with a furious rally, outscoring Houston 17-5 in the final two minutes of regulation. Andersson Garcia beat the buzzer with his ninth 3-pointer of the season, and then was mobbed by his teammates but UH dominated in the OT. The Cougars improved to 8-2 as a No. 1 seed. They now have won at least 32 games for the fifth time. This will be Houston’s fifth straight Sweet 16 and 16th all-time.

No. 3 Illinois vs. No. 4. Duke

Illinois has a very tough game against No. 2 Iowa State in the Sweet 16 with the winner then almost surely getting defending national champion UConn. The Illini are +3200 to win the national title. No. 3 seed Illinois dominated from start to finish in its 89-63 second-round win over 11th-seeded Duquesne, securing the Fighting Illini’s first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2005. Illinois led by as many as 32 in the second half en route to the fourth-largest NCAA Tournament win in program history. Terrence Shannon Jr. (30.5 PPG during his team’s current six-game winning streak) has recorded 56 points in two tournament games, the second-best two-game tally in Illinois history.

Duke has blown out its two opponents in this Dance so far and is +2300 to win the national title. In the past 25 NCAA Tournaments, Duke has advanced to the Sweet 16 in 19 of them. Duke ended James Madison’s national-best 14-game winning streak with a 93-55 rout of James Madison in the Round of 32. Duke’s 93 points matched the most by the Blue Devils in the NCAA Tournament since a 93-85 first-round win over UNC Wilmington on March 17, 2016. Duke’s defense held JMU to 55 points, matching a season-low by the Dukes and 29.0 below its season average of 84.0. The Blue Devils have held 29 of their 34 opponents to below their respective scoring average.

No. 1 North Carolina vs. No. 1 Purdue

Carolina (+1300 to win it all) is a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for a record 18th time and is 65-12 as a top seed. The Heels spanked No. 9 Michigan State in the Round of 32 to improve to 133-49 all-time in NCAA Tournament play. The 133 wins are the most by any school in event history. Including Saturday’s win, UNC has won 17 of its last 18 games when leading at halftime and is 57-6 under head coach Hubert Davis when leading at the break. UNC has advanced to a regional final for the 38th time, the round of 16 for the 36th time and to what the NCAA calls the Sweet 16 for a record 31st time. RJ Davis is an All-American point guard. Purdue (+600) has the nation’s most dominant player in two-time Big Ten Player of the Year Zach Edey, who also will win National Player of the Year for a second straight season. Purdue has reached the Sweet 16 for the fifth time in the last seven years, the second-most appearances in the country during that span (Gonzaga – 7). It marks the seventh trip of the Matt Painter era. Purdue won its first two games in the NCAA Tournament by a combined 67 points (78-50 vs. Grambling; 106-67 vs. Utah State). The 106 points were the most for a Big Ten team in an NCAA Tournament game since 1999. The Boilers are now 8-0 this season against nationally-ranked teams, winning by an average of 10.1 points per game. Purdue is 11-2 against the top 25 since the start of last season. Edey became the first player since Lew Alcindor (1968) to have at least 50 points, 35 rebounds and shoot 65 percent from the field in the first two NCAA Tournament games.
