This has been one of the strangest seasons in the English Premier League, probably since Leicester became the most unlikely champions ever.
Yes, there are some familiar names at the top of the table, but we are not really seeing any one team dominate.

It’s making things all rather tough to predict from week to week. As we are seeing all the teams near the top drop points, but we are going to look at some of the upcoming Boxing Day (Dec. 26) games to see if we can make some winning predictions.

Like we said at the top of this piece, the defending Premier League champions are on an unbelievable slide at the moment. A lot of fans and pundits are pointing to City losing Rodri to injury for the season, but that alone cannot account for just how bad City has been, picking up just 4 points in their last 5 league games. Everton is still too close to the relegation zone for comfort, but they are showing some signs of life. They have lost just once in their last 5 games, although 3 of those games ended in a draw.

At this stage of the proceedings, it is Chelsea who look to be the main threat to league leaders Liverpool. The London side did lose some ground this past weekend, though, dropping points in a 0-0 draw against Everton, while Liverpool hammered Spurs, so they need all 3 points here. Fulham is always a tricky opponent, and they come into this one having gone unbeaten in their last 5 (1W 4D). I think it will be another close one, but I am on Chelsea to win.

The current state of things in the EPL is good, as it means that we are likely to have an exciting battle for the top 4 spots. Finishing in the top 4 means an automatic Champions League spot, so it’s a great prize. Newcastle is 5 points out if 4th right now, but with back-to-back wins under their belt, they appear to be rounding into form. Villa made it into the Champions League after a strong show last season, and they are right there again, sitting 3 points outside the top 4. This has all the makings of a great matchup.

These two teams are basically symbolizing the strangeness of the current season. Many tipped Forest to be closer to the bottom this season, but as it stands now, they are in one of the 4 Champions League spots after winning 4 of their last 5 games. After a very decent start, Tottenham is on the slide, with reports out of London suggesting that the manager is on the hot seat. A 6-3 loss to Liverpool over the weekend may have made things much more uncomfortable for Ange Postecoglou.

Everton bested Arsenal 4-1 on Dec. 6. Outside of that impressive victory, though, it’s been rough going for the home squad. Everton has lost 4-of-5.
Before a 4-0 victory over Newcastle on Dec. 12, Leicester City had lost 4 straight. Leicester and Everton drew 1-1 in the last head-to-head.
No doubt, Leicester is the better play. Everton looked horrible in the 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace in their last.

These two drew in the last head-to-head. That was almost a year ago.
The Blues haven’t dominated in recent matches the way they did at the beginning of the season. Chelsea has won twice, drawn twice, and lost once in their last 5.
The loss, to West Ham United, is almost inexcusable. Chelsea blew a 2-1 lead. The Blues should make amends with a 2 goal victory against Wolverhampton.

No doubt, Newcastle should be in some trouble. But here’s the thing. On May 14, Newcastle lost to the Sky Blues by a single goal, 3-2.
Also, City has won by 2 or more goals in just 2 of their last 4 victories. In addition, Man City beat Leeds 7-0 in their last, which means the favored road squad could bounce. At +1 ½ +133, the home team is a decent play.

Throw out the last head-to-head. Tottenham is a much different team now than they were then. The Hotspur have won 3-of-4. The lone loss was in a Europa Conference League match.
We must question how hard Tottenham played in that contest. Liverpool has won 5 straight. Pool should win on Sunday, but this happens on Tottenham’s pitch. We’re taking a shot on the Hotspur.
