We are at the stage of the Premier League season where titles are often won and lost.

This is not to suggest that we will know the champion by the end of January, but the picture will be a good deal clearer than it is right now.

At the moment, Liverpool is the team to beat, but that could well change depending on the result of their upcoming game, which will be part of this preview.

That said, the teams that are chasing them are all going through little slumps, which Liverpool has not done yet.

There is a chance that the slump will come for the current leaders, but if they can continue to open their lead at the top, that slump in form might not be totally damaging.

All that said, we have a ton of great midweek games coming our way, so let’s take a look at a few that we really like.

Chelsea -185 vs Bournemouth +410 (Draw +350)

The great thing about the Premier League is that there are all kinds of battles going on outside of the race for the title. The biggest of those other battles is the race for the top 4 spots, with the teams landing there making it into the Champions League. When you consider the money that comes with a spot in that tournament, the pressure to land in the top 4 is huge.

Chelsea looked like the team most likely to challenge Liverpool this season, but picking up just 2 points from their last 4 games has seen them drop all the way down to 4th. Bournemouth is unbeaten in their last 5 games, winning 2 and drawing 3. That run means that they are in 7th but just 3 points behind Chelsea. It goes without saying that this game is massive.

Nottingham Forest +380 vs Liverpool -161 (Draw +300)

This is, without a doubt, the biggest game in the midweek schedule, as this one will have a definite impact on the title race. Nottingham Forest was engaged in a relegation battle last season, so the expectation was that this might be another long season, but they have done a massive U-turn and are now very much in the championship conversation.

They have won 6 in a row in the EPL to move all the way up to 3rd place, as well as winning again in the FA Cup this past weekend. As mentioned at the top of this piece, Liverpool is the team to catch at the moment, sitting at the top of the table on 46 points, 6 clear of Forest, with a game in hand still to come. I have a feeling that this one could be a tight battle, but I like Liverpool to edge it.

Everton +214 vs Aston Villa +131 (Draw +216)

When: Wednesday, January 15, 2025, 1:30 PM

On the face of it, this does not appear to be one of the best games on the midweek schedule, but there is a storyline that elevates it into must watch territory. That story is with Everton, who find themselves at the wrong end of the table, coming into this one on the heels of 2 straight losses. They decided it was time to make a change at the manager position, bringing back David Moyes for his 2nd stint at the club.

Will that be enough for Everton to have a new manager bounce? Villa is sitting in 8th place right now, but they are also just 4 points out of the top 4, so a win here could potentially move them a little closer. They are coming off a 2-1 win over Leicester, another team near the bottom, so expect a similar result here.

Arsenal -255 vs Tottenham +550 (Draw +410)

This is always a fixture that draws a ton of attention, but given how things are going this season, the spotlight on this game is even brighter. Both of these teams have fan bases that are growing more and more disillusioned with their current managers, so the outcome of this one has the potential to make the hot seat that much warner for both.

Arsenal is still in 2nd place in the league, but they have been slipping and are coming off a loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup. Tottenham’s league form has been rather dire over the past couple of months, plus they needed extra time to get past non-league Tamworth in the FA Cup this past weekend. An important game for both teams.

Outside of the individual games, there are a lot of things to wager on in the English Premier League, starting of course with picking the potential champion. Liverpool is in the driver’s seat right now, which means there is not a ton of value, unless you decide to go with one of the chasing teams.
