With the group stages now in the books, it’s time to get down to the real nitty-gritty in the European Championship.
There are 16 teams remaining, but that number will be cut in half once we get through the next set of games.
My Round of 16 Analysis
There is no such thing as an easy path to the final, but the teams that finished at the top of their respective groups will have a matchup that seems more manageable. That said, you could make a case for any of the final 16. Let’s take a look at the matchups and the Euro odds provided by MyBookie Sportsbook.
^Switzerland +234 vs Italy +140
The Swiss picked up 5 points in the group stage to finish 2nd behind the host nation, Germany. Italy was not entirely convincing in their 3 games, but they did enough to pick up 2nd in their group. This one definitely feels like a coin flip to me.
^Germany -174 vs Denmark +500
After an amazing 5-1 win over Scotland to open the tournament, the Germans have failed to reach those heights since, although they did win the group. They will have their hands full against a Denmark team that tied all 3 games in the group stage. Slight edge to the hosts here.
^England -250 vs Slovakia +760
The favorites to win this tournament have, for the most part, not been that impressive. England are among that lot despite winning their group. Slovakia survived a nervy final day to nab one of the best 3rd place spots in the Round of 16. England should win this one, but Slovakia will not be an easy out.
^Spain -500 vs Georgia +1325
When looking at the group stage as a whole, you have to say that Spain looked to be the most impressive team in the tournament. They will face a Georgia team that made it in after a stunning upset win over Portugal in their final group stage game. Their Cinderella story will probably end here.
^France -115 vs Belgium +360
These two teams came into the tournament among the favorites to win it all, but both have been disappointing to this point. France have struggled to score, while Belgium were basically clinging to life in their final game against Ukraine. I’m really on the fence about how this one might go.
^Portugal -255 vs Slovenia +730
Dome will point to Portugal’s loss to Georgia as a sign that this team is not as good as first though, but they had already punched their ticket into the knockout phase prior to that defeat. Slovenia came out of a group where all 4 teams finished on 4 points, but I think they could be in trouble here.
^Romania +630 vs Netherlands -220
One of the biggest surprises of the group stage was seeing Romania finish atop the group that everyone expected Belgium to win in a canter. Their prize now will be a matchup against the Netherlands, who had to settle for one of the 3rd place spots. The slight edge here goes to the Netherlands.
^Austria -114 vs Turkey +330
In every major tournament, we tend to see a dark horse emerge. You could certainly make a case for both of these teams to fit into that label. For me, Austria has been one of the most entertaining teams to watch in EURO 24, but I would not sleep on Turkey, who finished 2nd in their group behind Portugal.
