EURO Cup Games For Saturday: In the group stage of the European Championship, teams have time to recover and bounce back from a defeat.
That is no longer the case as we prepare to start the Round of 16.
My Analysis
The simple fact now is that a loss means it’s time to go home, while the winner takes one step closer to European glory. The knockout stage begins this weekend with 4 straight days of action, where we will have 2 games played on each day, Saturday and Sunday.
I think it’s fair to say that the favorites have underwhelmed, but perhaps now they will all step up a gear and deliver their best effort. Either way, we are going to start breaking down these games by looking at the 2 matchups that are coming on Saturday, also, we have for you the latest odds coming from MyBookie Sportsbook, so let’s get to it.
^Switzerland +234 vs Italy +140
The Swiss found themselves in Group A alongside the host nation Germany. They opened their tournament with a win over Hungary, after which they tied with Scotland.
Switzerland went into the final game of the group stage with a shot a winning the group, which they almost did, going a goal up on Germany before settling for a tie and the second-place spot in Group A. Switzerland scored 5 goals and surrendered 3 in the group stage, finishing with 5 points.
This Italy team is not as strong as what we have been used to seeing from this nation in the past. They had something of a shaky opening to the tournament, going 1-0 down in just 23 seconds in their opener against Albania.
Furthermore, they went on to lose 1-0 to Spain and looked to be potentially heading out of the tournament in their final game against Croatia.
They were behind in that one before getting the tying goal deep in injury time to pick up the point and move to second in the group. Italy scored 3 and surrendered 3 in the group stage.
Historically speaking, things have been tight when these two teams meet, with 4 of the last 5 matchups ending in a tie. It is the Swiss who are in as the favorite, but I have a hunch that Italy might edge it.
EURO Cup Pick: Switzerland 0-1 Italy Draw: +190 // Total O/U: 1.5 When: Saturday, June 29, 12 PM EST |
Germany -174 vs Denmark +500
Much of the pressure in this tournament is on the Germans. Sure, they have the benefit of playing at home, but that being a high level of expectation. They certainly lived up to the hype in their opener, beating Scotland 5-1.
They then beat Hungary 2-0 to clinch a spot in the Round of 16. That may explain why they took their foot off the gas a little in their final game, which they tied 1-1 with Switzerland.
Denmark, have made it to this stage of the tournament without winning a single game. They had a 1-0 lead over Slovenia in their opener, but had to settle for a tie. They then came from a goal down to tie 1-1 with England in game 2.
Denmark went into their final game knowing that they needed something against Serbia, which they got with a 0-0 tie.
At some point, Denmark is going to need to find a way to generate some offense if they are to go any further in this tournament. I’m not sure if they are capable of making that happen, which is why I am for Germany to win.
