EURO Cup Games For Sunday: The group stage of the European Championship is always something of a breathless affair, with the games coming thick and fast for days upon end.
We are getting a little breather at the moment, but not for too long, as the Round of 16 will begin on Saturday.
My Analysis
Over the course of 4 days, we will see the remaining 16 teams cut in half, and with the way things are going, I would not be surprised to see at least one upset coming our way in those games.
We have already covered the Saturday games in a separate post, so let’s jump ahead to Sunday to make betting predictions for the two games being played on that day, and where you can consult at a glance the updated lines of MyBookie Sportsbook.
^England -242 vs Slovakia +760
Every team in the Euros is under some level of pressure, but I think it’s fair to say that some are under more than others.
England is one of those teams undergoing a high level of scrutiny. They have one of the best squads in the world and are among the favorites to win it all this year, but they did not look very good at all in the group stage.
Sure, they went unbeaten, but they did so with an ultra-defensive style of football that has fans and pundits scratching their heads.
Over the 3 group stage games, they managed just 2 goals, while only surrendering 1. Not excellent enough.
Slovakia delivered one of the biggest surprises of the tournament when they beat Belgium 1-0 in their opening group stage game.
That set them up nicely, but a 2-1 loss to Ukraine in their second game meant that they needed something out of their final game to move on.
A 1-1 tie with Romania did the trick and was enough to get Slovakia one of the 3rd place spots into the Round of 16.
I’m not so sure that we will see England deviate from their plan and open things up, so expect another tight one here, with the English doing just enough to move on.
EURO Cup Pick: England 1-0 Slovakia Draw: +330 // Total O/U: 2.5 When: Sunday, June 30, 12 PM EST |
Spain -500 vs Georgia +1350
We have something of a David versus Goliath affair going on with this one, but I’m not so sure if we get the same outcome as we did in the biblical battle.
In my opinion, Spain has looked the best team in this tournament, rolling to 3 straight wins in the group stage, scoring 5 goals and not conceding once. They have had 5 different goalscorers, so they are not reliant on one player doing all the heavy lifting.
The danger here, though, is that they take their opponent a little too lightly, but since they haven’t done that yet, I would be surprised to see them suddenly take their foot off the gas.
Georgia came into this tournament the hard way, needing to go through a playoff just to get in, but they have made the most of their time here despite being the biggest longs hot.
They lost 3-1 to Turkey in their opening game but kept their dream alive with a 1-1 draw against Czechia. A win against Portugal looked highly unlikely, but they shocked everyone by beating Ronaldo and company 2-0 to move on.
Georgia has been one of the great stories of EURO 24, but I think that story comes to an end on Sunday.
