One of the biggest complaints about international football in the past was the number of meaningless friendly games.
EURO 2024 Group D Odds: Breakdown Favorites & Potential Upsets
My Analysis for Group D
The introduction of the Nations League delivered something exciting and new, with teams doing well in that tournament given an extra shot at qualifying for major tournaments, while also having the opportunity to move up and potentially be seeded higher in major tournament group stage draws. We will see several teams in Euro 24 who have taken that path, but does their backdoor entry into the tournament mean that they will struggle against those that won via direct qualifying. Only time will tell. For now, let’s take a closer look at Group D.
^Poland Euro Cup Betting Lines +1025
Poland are one of the teams that took advantage of the Nations League playoffs to punch their ricket into Euro 24. They finished a rather distant 3rd in their qualification group and had to beat Estonia and Wales to secure their spot. They have previously played in this tournament 4 times, with their best showing coming in 2016 when they made it to the quarterfinals. Furthermore, they will rely heavily on Robeert Lewandowski, who appears to be their sole threat in the attacking half. Moving on does seem like a bit of a long shot, especially in such a tough group.
^Netherlands EuroCup Betting Lines +280
After a few years when they struggled to live up to the iconic teams of the past, Holland once again appear to be on the rose as they look to do better than their Round of 16 exit in the previous Euros. Oddly enough, they have been placed in the same group as France, who they had to face twice in qualifying. They lost both of those games, so it does seem likely that Holland may well have to settle for 2nd in this group, unless of course they can get something out of their meeting with the prohibitive tournament favorites. They won 2 of 3 in warm up games, with a 2-1 loss to Germany coming in the other.
^Austria EuroCup Betting Lines +780
While they will almost certainly be taking a backseat to France and Holland in this group, I would certainly not be sleeping on the Austrians. They pushed a very good Belgium side to the limit in qualifying, finishing just 1 point back of the talented Belgians in the qualification group. Austria has gone unbeaten in their last 4 games in the buildup to this tournament, with their 6-1 win over Turkey being the pick of the bunch. They are likely going to be battling Poland for 3rd in the group, a battle I think they can win, but will that be good enough for one of the 4 3rd place finisher spots in the Round of 16, which is where Austria bowed out in the last tournament.
^France EuroCup Betting Lines -182
You can make an argument that Kylian Mbappe is currently the best player in the world, but as good as he is, this French team is talented enough to not have to depend on the exploits of their talismanic forward. France last won this tournament in 200o and were the losing finalists in 2016, where they played on home soil. They look more than ready to make another deep run in this tournament, although a recent loss to Germany will serve as a reminder that nothing should be taken for granted.
