EURO 2024 Betting Odds: Group A Favorite to Move on, Upset and Surprises

When it comes to soccer tournaments, it’s fair to say that the World Cup is the greatest international event.

EURO 2024 Group A betting lines: Who’s the Favorite to Advance?

My Analysis for Group A

There are some, though, who will argue that the European Championships are not that far behind. The benefit that the Euros has is that there are only 24 teams, very few of which can be considered countries that will get totally steamrolled. The 2024 edition of the Euros gets underway this week, with the opening game between the hosts, Germany and Scotland set for Friday afternoon. Those two are in Group A, which is the one we are going to focus on here, although we will cover them all. The top 2 teams in each group qualify, with the top 4 3rd place finishers also moving on to the Round of 16. Let’s quickly break down Group A.

Germany Euro Odds -280

One of the biggest names in international football, Germany is actually on a bit of a skid at the moment. They have failed to move beyond the group stage in each of their last 2 trips to the World Cup, while also going out in the Round of 16 in the last Euros. While Germany comes in with the advantage of playing at home as the hosts, it also means that they have not really played many meaningful matches in the build-up to this tournament. That said, they should still be able to get out of this group, and I would be surprised if it was not in the top spot.

Scotland Euro Odds +1200

After years out in the cold, Scotland has now qualified for back-to-back Euros. The knock against this team is that they have never in their history made it out of the group stage in any major tournament. They have a legit shot at breaking that goose egg in Germany, but there is some cause for concern. After an excellent qualification, where they beat Spain along the way, they have cooled off dramatically in the build-up to the tournament. Scoring goals could be an issue, but if they can stay tight at the back, they could finally move out of the group stage.

Switzerland Euro Odds +400

The Swiss have made a habit of qualifying for tournaments over the last 16 years, only to go out with a whimper each time. They were not particularly great in qualifying in what was not a particularly strong group, winning just 4 of their 10 games and moving on via finishing 2nd in the qualifying group. Like Scotland, this is a team that does not have much going on up front, but they are solid in the defensive end. They are 2nd favorite in Group A, but the holes in this squad make me more than a little concerned.

Hungary Euro Odds +1000

If you want to talk about success in the qualification stage, you need to talk about Hungary, who qualified without losing a single game. They will be hoping that momentum carries over into the Euros, with their first test in Group A coming against Switzerland. If they can get the win in that game, they might well roll to the 2nd place finish in this group. I think Hungary has a chance to be the surprise team in Group A, and they look a good bet to move on.
