Most Memorable Moments in Euro History
Italy Wins a Semifinal Contest Over the Soviet Union Via a Coin Toss
Before penalty kicks there was a coin.
At the 1968 Euros, the Italians and the Soviet Union played to a 0-0 draw in a terrific quarterfinals matchup.
Back then, the Euros decided the winner in a draw via a, and this sounds crazy, flip of a coin.
Italian captain Giacinto Facchetti called tails and the coin came up tails.
The Italians would go on to beat Yugoslavia 2-0 in the Euro Finals.

Ricardo Stops Vassell’s Penalty Shot in 2004
There was massive drama at the 2004 Euros.
Host Portugal faced favored England in the quarterfinals.
As England’s Darius Vassell stepped up to take a key shot in the penalty shootout, Portuguese goalie Ricardo took off his gloves.
Taking off his gloves so startled Vassell, that the English player delivered a poor, weak shot that Ricardo blocked.
Ricardo then took things into his own hands by sending a game winning penalty past English goal keeper David James, propelling Portugal to the semifinals.

Denmark Upsets Germany to Win the Title in 1992
Upsets at the Euros don’t often happen.
So when Denmark beat Germany to win the title in 1992, it turned many heads.
The key play during the Danes eventual title winning run was when Peter “The Great Dane” Schmeichel stopped Dutch legend Marco van Basten’s penalty shot.
Denmark made all 5 of their penalty shots to take the next step onto the final.

The Most Amazing Goal in International Soccer History from Holland’s Marco van Basten
Marco van Basten provided what many soccer fans consider the greatest goal in international soccer history.
Facing the Soviet Union in the final at the 1988 Euro Championship, the Netherlands was at the top of their game.
But it was van Basten’s amazing goal that sealed the deal.
A lofted pass over the USSR defense went to van Basten to the back post.
Instead of securing the ball, van Basten rose in the air and kicked it into the net.
The amazing shot secured a 2-0 lead and the Netherlands a Euro Cup title.

Spain Dominates from 2008 to 2012
From 2008 through 2012 no team on planet Earth was as dominant as Spain.
The Spaniards obliterated every foe they faced.
They did so in both Euro Cup championships as well as their 2010 World Cup opponents.
The names will go down in history: Xavi, David Villa, Fernando Torres, Sergio Ramos, Juan Mata, etc.
No international team so thoroughly commanded soccer fans’ attention like the Spanish squads from 2008 through 2012.

Greece Wins the Euro Cup in 2004
Greece beating host Portugal at the 2004 Euro Cup Final might be the most amazing incident in the history of soccer.
The Greeks aren’t known for having a powerhouse soccer team.
Greece hadn’t made a Euro Cup appearance since 1980.
The Greeks finished second in their group behind Portugal.
Greece upset France in the quarterfinals, the Czech Republic in the semis, and then handed Portugal a loss in the final.
