Miami Heat Insights
Jimmy Butler
The Heat would like to trade All-Star Butler by Thursday’s deadline but it’s not looking good that will happen. The Suns want him but can’t get Butler without trading Bradley Beal, who is not willing to waive his no-trade clause – and not many teams want Beal regardless. Trade negotiations between the Warriors and Heat have come to a halt due to Butler’s unwillingness to sign an extension with Golden State. Butler remains indefinitely suspended by Miami for “intentionally withholding services.”
The Suspension
It’s the third time he has been suspended this year by the team. Butler has a $52 million player option for next season, but his representation has indicated repeatedly that he prefers to bypass it and become a free agent. Last month, the Memphis Grizzlies had preliminary talks with the Heat about Butler, sources said, but Butler also made it known he would not commit long-term in Memphis.
Last Game Review
Miami has been very uneven with all this chaos but did win 105-103 in San Antonio on Saturday, the team’s third win in the past four games. It certainly helped that Spurs superstar Wembanyama didn’t play. San Antonio point guard Chris Paul came up short on a 19-foot jumper with five seconds remaining after dribbling the clock down in an attempt to get the final shot off in regulation.
Bam Adebayo
Adebayo hit a 19-foot jumper as time expired to cap a 30-point, 13-rebound outing. It marked his third game-winning basket with under a second to play, the second-most in team history (since play-by-plays were tracked in 1996).
Bam was 13 for 21 from the field and had nine defensive rebounds to finish an assist shy of his second triple-double of the season. It was Adebayo’s 217th career regular-season double-double, now four shies of Rony Seikaly’s franchise record. Over his last five appearances, Adebayo has averaged 21.0 points, 12.2 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.0 blocks (perfect to find his NBA online betting props).
Erik Spoelstra
“We needed a place where the ball could go,” Coach Spoelstra said of Adebayo’s winning basket, “and he was very efficient. I’m just really happy for Bam. He got to a clean look, he got to his spot and was able to elevate. It was just a beautiful look. To see it floating in the air and then you see the clock go, that’s got to be a great feeling for him.”
Tyler Herro
Herro had a season-low 11 points in the victory but did have eight assists. The All-Star has gone through a bit of a rough stretch shooting over his last five outings, during which he has shot 40.2 percent from the field and 28.8 percent from three-point range. Herro has still averaged 21.8 points, 8.6 assists and 4.2 rebounds in that span. He currently scored in double figures in a career-high 76 consecutive games dating back to last season, including both the regular season and postseason, the eighth-longest streak in franchise history.
The Stats
The Heat also got 19 points from Terry Rozier and 12 rebounds from center Kel’el Ware, who has become a Rookie of the Year favorite. He is averaging 13.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.50 blocks in his six starts this season, including three double-doubles. Despite being linked to an ongoing federal gambling investigation, Rozier remained in the Heat rotation, entering in Spoelstra’s first substitution. Rozier and the Heat have declined to comment on the investigation.
The Heat have held opponents to under 100 points 12 times this season, going a perfect 12-0 in those contests. Miami is in a current 27-day span (1/30 – 2/25) in which it will play just one home game.

Chicago Bulls Insights
Zach LaVine
The Bulls finally found a taker for former All-Star guard LaVine and his big contract, shipping him to Sacramento in a three-team deal that saw the Kings send their All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio. Chicago got back Zach Collins and Tre Jones from San Antonio as well as the Bulls’ own 2025 first-round pick from the Spurs. They also got Kings guard Kevin Huerter, who could be flipped. Not a very good package back, but Chicago simply wanted off LaVine’s contract.
The Injuries
After missing most of last season with various injuries, LaVine rebounded amid trade rumors and was having a nice season, averaging 24 points (shooting 51.1 percent from the field and 44.6 percent from 3) with 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists. In parts of eight seasons, LaVine scored more points in a Chicago Bulls uniform than all but five other players: Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Bob Love, Luol Deng and Jerry Sloan. The two-time slam-dunk champ LaVine also took and made more 3-pointers than any Bulls player ever. But LaVine played in 416 regular-season games for the Bulls. In that span, they went 174-242.
The New Players
The biggest winners in this deal for the Bulls are likely Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu. Dosunmu looks to be the starting small forward moving, and his offensive numbers are significantly better as a starter (14.1 PPG, 49.8 FG%, 5.3 APG, 1.8 3PG) than off the bench (10.1 PPG, 45.2 FG%, 3.7 APG, 1.1 3PG). White’s offensive averages in eight games without LaVine this season (20.6 PPG, 5.6 APG) were better than when LaVine was present (17.9 PPG, 4.4 APG).
Last Game Review
Chicago has been off since a 127-119 loss in Detroit on Sunday without LaVine, who had been dealing with a personal matter. A 3-pointer by Nikola Vucevic pulled the Bulls within 111-104 with 6:13 to play, but Chicago couldn’t string together enough stops to make a serious run. Vucevic had a triple double of 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and also could be traded by Thursday. The Warriors covet him.
Josh Giddey
Giddey had 20 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals in the loss for his 15th double-double of the season in the losing effort. With the Bulls moving on from LaVine, Giddey will step into a larger role in the offense. He is now one of four players in NBA history with at least 1,500 assists and 1,500 rebounds before turning 23 years old (Magic Johnson, LeBron James, Luka Dončić). Coby White also could see more shots without LaVine and had 22 points Sunday.
The Rankings
Chicago has 18 games with 50-plus boards this season. This total ranks third in the NBA. The Bulls are one of two teams in the NBA with 10 or more games of 20-plus 3FGM along with Boston (keep and eye on the NBA online betting odds).
Coby White
White has had at least four 3FGMs in five-straight games versus Miami, shooting .426 3FG% during this stretch. Vucevic has logged a double-double in back-to-back games against the Heat, which is a part of 26 career double-doubles versus Miami. Chicago is looking to win the opening game of the regular season series with Miami for the third consecutive time, winning the season series opener in each of the last two seasons.
^Heat vs Bulls Season Series
Somehow, the Eastern Conference rivals have yet to play this season. Memphis of the West and Chicago are the only teams yet to face Miami this season. It also marks as the third-latest date the two teams have faced each other for the first time, only the 1998-99 lockout season (4/10/99) and the 2020-21 delayed season (3/12/21) were later. Last season, the teams split the series 2-2, as Miami has currently won seven of their last nine in Chicago. The Bulls lead all-time in the regular season 65-64.
