Louisville Cardinals Analysis
Louisville (8-4) closed the year strong by winning four of five, capped by a 41-14 win at rival Kentucky to take back the Governor’s Cup title after a seven-year drought. The Cards had two freshman 100-yard rushers in a game for the first time in program history, including redshirt freshmen. True freshmen Isaac Brown and Duke Watson surpassed the century mark on the ground for the Cards.
Tyler Shough
QB Shough was 9-of-18 passing for 128 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. He finished the season with 3,195 passing yards (third in the ACC), 23 touchdowns (fifth), and a 148.1 QBR (sixth). Shough will not play in the bowl game as he entered the portal.
Isaac Brown
Brown was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie and Offensive Player of the Year. Brown, a true freshman, is the first player in school history to capture both the league’s top rookie of the year awards. He rushed for 1,078 yards and 11 touchdowns in 12 games, averaging a solid 7.3 yards per carry, which ranks third nationally. Brown stands second nationally with six rushes of over 40 yards and recorded 11 rushes of 20 yards.
He also stands fifth in the ACC with rushing yards and touchdowns. Brown recorded the second-most rushing yards by a freshman in the nation. He became the first true freshman in Louisville history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season and set the school’s freshman rushing record, surpassing Lamar Jackson’s previous mark of 960 yards set during the 2015 season.
Ja’Corey Brooks
After three years at Alabama, WR Ja’Corey Brooks transferred to Louisville in the offseason and immediately became one of the Cardinals’ most important players. The former five-star recruit finished the season with 61 catches for 1,013 yards with nine touchdowns and was a first-team All-ACC selection. However, he also entered the portal and will miss the game.
Harrison Bailey
Senior Bailey is listed as the starting quarterback for the bowl. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Bailey was a top 100 recruit in the Class of 2020 and was one of the prized signees in the Tennessee recruiting class that year. He started Tennessee‘s final three games of the 2020 season before leaving the Volunteers program after the 2021 season. Bailey then spent a year at UNLV, mainly as a backup but led the Rebels to a win over Nevada in the season finale. After a second trip into the transfer portal, Bailey ended up at Louisville.
“Luckily we have a guy who has a lot of experience in our system,” U of L offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Brohm said of Bailey. “Harrison will do a great job for us. He’s just been looking for the chance to get on the field and show what he’s learned the past couple of years.”
Ashton Gillotte
The defense was led by second-team All-ACC Gillotte, but he also will miss the bowl. Gillotte recorded 47 quarterback pressures this season in 12 starts, according to PFF. The senior was credited with 43 tackles and leads the team with 10.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Defensive back Quincy Riley, who led the secondary with nine pass breakups and had two interceptions, also will skip the bowl. The Cardinals will be without 22 players who have either opted out or entered the transfer portal in the Sun Bowl.
The UofL defense has been up-and-down over the course of the season, but have looked to establish its footing over the last two wins. In victories over Pittsburgh and Kentucky, the Cardinals are allowing 11.5 points per game after holding the Panthers to nine points and Kentucky to 14.
^Washington Huskies Analysis
After reaching the national title game last season, this season always figured to be a step back in Seattle. The loss of coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama and significant roster turnover — due to departing seniors and the transfer portal — resulted in what amounted to a reset for new coach Jedd Fisch. Washington (6-6) alternated losses and wins over its final five. The team is in pretty good shape in terms of opt outs or transfer portal players.
Will Rogers
QB Rogers was benched for the finale against Oregon, and Fisch stated freshman Demond Williams will start in the bowl. Williams threw for 201 yards and a touchdown in the 49-21 loss to the Ducks. Williams said that game added confidence and offensive coordinator Brennan Carroll has picked up on it. The last time a true freshman quarterback started a game for the Huskies before Williams was in 2015, when true freshman Jake Browning started all but one game.
Brennan Carroll
“A confident player,” Carroll said when asked about Williams in practices since his first start. “He’s done a great job all year, really since he got here this past spring, just developing as a player, as a person. He’s going to play with a bunch of confidence out there and I’m excited to see what he’s got.”
The Huskies entered bowl season 110th nationally out of 134 teams by scoring an average of 22.5 points a game. But Williams, who came with Fisch from Arizona, will have 1,000-yard rusher Jonah Coleman and Denzel Boston, who led Washington with 807 yards receiving. Coleman has 10 rushing TDs and Boston nine receiving scores.
Carson Bruener
Defensively, linebacker Bruener led the Huskies this season with 93 tackles and three interceptions and was the only player on the team that received higher than honorable mention all-conference honors (he was a third-team selection).
One main storyline for the 2024 UW football team has been about the amount of change that has occurred since the end of the 2023 season. In fact, UW has just two returning, regular starters back from ‘23 (LB Alphonzo Tuputala and CB Elijah Jackson), and the Huskies lost 41 letterwinners off of last year’s team, while adding 59 new players to the roster since the end of last season.
Steve Belichick
This will be the last game as Washington defensive coordinator for Belichick as he will join his father Bill Belichick’s staff at North Carolina in the same role at the conclusion of Washington’s season. Steve Belichick, 37, was hired by Washington in February. Before that, he had spent 12 seasons as a defensive assistant in New England, including five as a defensive playcaller. Washington is ranked 27th in the nation in total defense this season under Belichick, allowing 324.8 yards per game.
^Louisville vs. Washington Series History
First-ever meeting between these schools. Washington will be making its 43rd bowl game appearance all-time. The Huskies enter the game with an 21-20-1 overall record in bowl games, dating back to the 1924 Rose Bowl, where the UW tied Navy, 14-14. This Louisville marks the fifth trip to the Sun Bowl for UW, but the first since 2002. Louisville played its first-ever bowl game at the Sun Bowl in 1958 when the Cards defeated Drake 34-20.

New Looked Beavers
The Oregon State Beavers will come into this bowl game without the services of their quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei. It was Christmas Eve in 2022 when he committed to Oregon State, out of Clemson. Now, he is in the transfer portal again. He threw for 2,638 yards and 21 touchdowns on the season. In his place, it appears Ben Gulbranson will get the nod.
Anthony Gould was the top receiver for the Beavers. He also will not play in this game, as he is heading to the NFL Draft. The top threat will be Silas Bolden, who caught 4 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown in the season finale at Oregon.
Damien Martinez had a big season for the Beavers in the run game. He is suspended for this game, as he had a DUI. Martinez rushed 194 times, for just shy of 1,200 yards and 9 touchdowns. The running back for the Beavers will be Deshaun Fenwick, who carried it 90 times on the season.
Change up for Irish As Well
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are going to be without a couple of their stars as well. Sam Hartman, who spent one year with the program is heading to the NFL Draft, and will not play. Running back Audric Estime, also has declared for the NFL Draft, and will not play in this game.
Hartman tossed for more than 2,680 yards and 24 touchdowns on the season. Estime carried the football 210 times for 1,341 yards and 18 touchdowns. Another guy out for the Irish is receiver Chris Tyree. He caught 26 passes for 484 yards and three touchdowns in 2023.
The three losses for the GFighting Irish this season came to Ohio State, Louisville and then on the road at the Clemson Tigers. The best wins for the Irish came against Duke and USC.
Sun Bowl Oregon State vs Notre Dame Betting Pick | Battle in El Paso
These two teams heading to Texas for this game are both going to want to finish strong. Both teams are a little short handed coming into this game, so we expect a tight one. Sure, the Fighting Irish are the favorites in this game, but we expect the Beavers to keep the game close. Our final bet for this game is the Oregon State Beavers +6.5 over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday!
