In terms of how we get to a National Champion this season, things are a little different than what we have been used to in recent years.
The days of the 4-teams playoff are gone, as we are now looking at 12 teams going into the postseason for the first time ever.
College Football New Year’s Six Bowl Games Analysis
The edge still goes to the top 4 teams, though, as they will get an automatic bye, while the other 8 teams will duke it out.
By the time we get to the final 8 teams in with a shot at winning it all, we will be deep into the holiday season, which is where the New Year’s Six Bowl Games will come into play.
This batch of games has always been reserved for the best teams in college football and included the semi-final games when we were down to the final 4. They are now spread out a little more and will serve as the quarterfinal and semi-final games this season. Here is how the schedule looks for the coming playoffs:
- December 31: Fiesta Bowl (quarterfinal)
- January 1: Peach Bowl (quarterfinal), Rose Bowl (quarterfinal), Sugar Bowl (quarterfinal)
- January 9: Orange Bowl (semi-final)
- January 10: Cotton Bowl (semi-final)
In years to come, the bowls will rotate so that they all get a shot at hosting a semi-final game, but what we are concerned with here is how things will play out this season. With a good chunk of games still to come, some of which are huge, there is still plenty of time for things to change, so let’s see if we can figure out which teams will be taking part in the New Year’s Six Bowl Games.
^In my opinion, this is the perfect time to actually start looking at the possible matchups, as we now have an idea as to how the Playoff Committee has viewed things to this point in the season. They delivered their first rankings earlier this week, placing Oregon, Ohio State, Georgia, and Miami in the top 4. Remember, the bonus for the teams that land the final 4 spots is that they essentially get a bye week while the other 8 teams battle it out for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Looking down through the rankings, there are a couple of teams who look a little wobbly. For example, Alabama simply cannot afford to take another loss after losing twice already this season, especially with Ole Miss hovering just outside the top 12. The Rebels have Georgia coming up on the schedule, with a win there potentially setting the cat among the pigeons. Other than that, I think the top 12 looks pretty solid right now, so let’s try and project things out using the rankings as they are now, even though we all know that things will almost certainly change in the coming weeks, especially with the Conference Championship Games still to come.
Right now, you would have Texas playing Boise State for a quarterfinal spot, with the Longhorns very much the favorite to win that one. Penn State against Alabama would be a fun matchup that, in my mind, would be something of a toss-up. Pushed to make a pick, though, I would still lean toward Alabama.
Tennessee going against Notre Dame would be an amazing game and is one where I am hard pushed to make a pick. This is the beauty of the new playoff setup in that we are going to get matchups we rarely ever see, but which are absolutely fantastic. I am leaning toward Tennessee in that one. Finally, we would have a pair of unbeatens in Indiana and BYU meeting up in what is an interesting looking game. Sure, we might never get to see given the changes that are sure to come, but in this scenario, I would give the slight edge to Indiana.
Okay, so if things play out as suggested above, we would be looking at the 8 quarterfinal teams being as follows:

- Indiana Hoosiers
How they would match up in the quarterfinals would be totally dependent upon the final rankings, but if you ask me, this is a fantastic final 8. It really wouldn’t matter who went against whom, as any permutation of those teams would deliver some great games.
This, of course, only covers the first 4 games of the New Year’s Six, with the final two reserved for the 4 teams that move into the semi-finals. In this scenario, we would know the top seeds, so who looks to be the most fragile of the current top 4? Georgia has had to battle their way out of some tough games, while Carson Beck has been making INT passes an all-too-common thing. If that continues, the Dawgs could be in trouble. I am also still not fully sold on the Miami Hurricanes, as they too have had to battle their way to some wins that were tougher than expected.
If a couple of the top seeds do indeed drop out in this scenario, who could spring the minor upset? The Texas Longhorns were soundly beaten by Georgia in their lone loss to this point, but they still look more than good enough to take a run at the Natty. I am also looking at the Tennessee Volunteers as a potential upset waiting to happen. Whatever way you slice it, the playoffs are going to be a ton of fun to watch this year, and early into the next. The New Year’s Six Bowls Games are now more important than ever, and I for one cannot wait until we ring in the New Year with some great college football games to look forward to.

The game was originally created in 1968 by the Georgia Lions Club as a fundraiser, but after years of poor attendance and revenue, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce took over the game.

The first home of the Orange Bowl was Miami Field before moving to the Miami Orange Bowl stadium in 1938.

The Cotton Bowl Classic is the fourth oldest bowl in NCAA football, having been played in Dallas-Fort Worth since 1937.

The goal of every team heading into the college football season is to make the playoffs and hopefully end up as the National Champion. Since only 4 teams can actually get that opportunity, at least until things change in 2024, the secondary prize is to land a big bowl game. They don’t come much bigger than the New Year’s Six bowl games, which, of course, includes the playoff semi-finals. Let’s take a quick look at all 6 of those games to get an idea of what we have to look forward to so you can make your bets on the College Football Bowl Odds.
Orange Bowl – Clemson Vs Tennessee – December 30 at 8 PM EST
While both of these teams had very good seasons, both are probably more than a little disappointed not to have made the playoffs. Still, this has all the makings of an absolute shootout and should be a fun one to watch. It is Clemson who are in as a 6 ½ point favorite, with the point total set at 64.
Sugar Bowl – Kansas State Wildcats Vs Alabama Crimson Tide – December 31 at Noon EST
It’s more than a little surprising to have seen Alabama lose twice this season, and even more surprising to see them out of the playoffs. They will have a tough one here, as Kansas State are sure to still be riding high after knocking off TCU in OT to win the Big 12 Championship. They would love to end the season with another big scalp, but they are in as a 4-point underdog. The O/U is set at 54 ½.
Cotton Bowl – USC Trojans Vs Tulane Green Wave – January 2 at 1 PM EST
You can’t come much closer to a playoff berth than USC did this season in their first year under head coach Lincoln Riley. They would have been in were it not for a blowout loss to Utah in the PAC-12 Championship Game. That loss is sure to still be stinging once this game rolls around, which could be bad news for Tulane. USC is a modest 2-point favorite, with the total set at 61 ½.
Rose Bowl – Utah Utes Vs Penn State Nittany Lions – January 2 at 5 PM EST
The Utah Utes is another team sure to be riding on a high after winning the PAC-12 Championship, although there is always the danger of a bit of a letdown after reaching such lofty heights. The Nittany Lions had themselves a 10-win season and will be looking to close things out with another win. Utah is a 3-point favorite, with the total set at 52.
Fiesta Bowl – TCU Horned Frogs Vs Michigan Wolverines – December 31 at 4 PM EST
The first of the playoff semifinals is a bit of a surprise, as I don’t think too many people outside of Texas had the TCU Horned Frogs going to the playoffs. They are definitely there on merit, but they have a tough one against Michigan, who are in the playoffs for the second straight season. No real surprise to see the Wolverines in as a 7 ½ point favorite here, with the O/U set at 59.
Georgia Bulldogs Vs Ohio State Buckeyes – December 31 at 8 PM EST
The road to a repeat for the Georgia Bulldogs begins with a matchup that a lot of fans pegged as a potential National Championship matchup at the start of the season. The Ohio State Buckeyes somewhat backed into the playoffs, but they are going to be a tough test for the defending champions. Georgia is currently a 6 ½ point favorite, with the O/U set at 61 ½.

Analyzing The College Bowl Projections Identifies New Year’s Six Bowls Favorites
If you’re fired about the 2016 college football season and you’d like to know which title contenders are set to reach the four-team CFB Playoff and which ones are likely going to make appearances in the other New Year’s day Bowl Six matchups, then you’ve come to the right place.
My expert college bowl game predictions will identify the handful of teams that could find their way into the most coveted bowl games in all of college football. With that said, let’s get started.
Bowl Game – Date – Location – Matchup – Projection
Peach Bowl | CFB Semifinal
Dec. 31 – Atlanta – TBD – Alabama vs. Washington
Analysis: Right now, the top-ranked Huskies look like they’d take on No. 4 Washington in the Peach Bowl semifinal. While the Alabama Crimson Tide get a ton of national love for their perennially powerful ways, I’m going on record to say that Washington looks like a team that could beat anyone – the Tide included. The Huskies are ranked fourth in scoring (48.2 ppg) and sixth in points allowed (14.5 ppg).
Fiesta Bowl | CFB Semifinal
Dec. 31 – Glendale, Ariz. – TBD – Michigan vs. Clemson
If they both win out from this point, the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines and No. 3 Clemson Tigers would meet up in the Fiesta Bowl semis. Personally, I don’t see how the Wolverines, even with their elite defense, stop Deshaun Watson and company from making back-to-back national championship game appearances.
Orange Bowl
Dec. 30 – Miami – ACC vs. Big Ten/SEC/ND – Louisville vs. Wisconsin
While I currently have No. 5 Louisville set to participate in the 2016 Orange Bowl, I think it’s quite possible the Cardinals could still make a push for the CFB playoff – if they win out an some other top title contenders struggle or lose outright. I love Wisconsin and their stout defense, but I believe the Badgers’ lack of scoring will come back to bite them in the rear end.
Cotton Bowl
Jan. 2 – Arlington, Texas – TBD – Boise State vs. West Virginia
If one – or both – of these national title hopefuls go unbeaten, they could get serious consideration for a berth in the four-team CFB Playoff. The more likely scenario is that voters screw both teams over, putting them in this New Year’s Day Bowl Six matchup.
Rose Bowl
Jan. 2 – Pasadena, Calif. – Big Ten vs. Pac-12 – Ohio State vs. Utah
If this pairing takes place between the currently sixth-ranked Buckeyes and 17th-ranked Utes, then the SU pick for an Ohio State win is a virtual lock!
Sugar Bowl
Jan. 2 – New Orleans – SEC vs. Big 12 – Texas A&M vs. Baylor
This Lone Star State matchup looks like a flat-out thriller just waiting to happen – if Baylor doesn’t run the table to challenge for a berth in the four-team CFB Playoff that is. Texas A&M still has hopes of reaching the four-team playoff, but the Aggies would need a ton of favorable circumstances happen for that to become a reality.
