National Championship Betting on Possible Darkhorses
As we approach the College Football Playoff, several teams are in the hunt for the national title.
This year’s field of contenders extends beyond the usual powerhouses, providing great opportunities for those looking to bet on the underdogs and "on-the-hunt" teams.
Here’s a breakdown of the top championship contenders outside of the favorites, with a look at why each team could be a smart pick.
Writer’s Darkhorse Picks Going for the National Championship
Miami Hurricanes (+1200)
Miami has quietly assembled an impressive season, overcoming a relatively challenging schedule with an undefeated record.
They may not be the first team that comes to mind, but their balanced approach on both offense and defense makes them a legitimate threat.
With playmakers on offense and a top-ranked defense, Miami has shown it can compete with higher-ranked teams.
Their chance at a first national title since 2001 could give them extra motivation, and if they continue their current form, they’re well-positioned for a serious playoff run.
Tennessee Volunteers (+1650)
Tennessee has maintained an impressive season despite an early loss, demonstrating strength in their offense.
Their win over Alabama showed they can compete with the best, and with their high-powered passing game, the Volunteers can keep pace with almost any team.
The question for Tennessee lies in its defensive capability.
While the Volunteers have seen ups and downs on defense, they are an explosive team that could capitalize on the playoff format and make a run for the title.
Alabama Crimson Tide (+1675)
Despite two losses, Alabama still finds itself in the top-10 rankings, thanks to an impressive win against Georgia and consistent performances against other ranked opponents.
Led by an experienced coaching staff and a roster of young, talented players, Alabama has the depth and skills to make a comeback in the playoffs.
With head coach Nick Saban at the helm, Alabama will bring strong game plans, especially in the playoff atmosphere where they thrive.
Betting on Alabama at this stage could be rewarding if they manage to outplay some higher-seeded opponents.
Penn State Nittany Lions (+2100)
Penn State has carved out a strong season with solid wins, though they fell short against Ohio State.
As one of the best defenses in the country, the Nittany Lions excel at limiting big plays and keeping games within reach, an advantage in high-stakes playoff games.
Quarterback play will be key, and Penn State’s offense has shown it can produce when needed.
This season’s focus on defense, combined with a balanced offense, makes Penn State a contender in the playoff picture.
Ole Miss Rebels (+3100)
Ole Miss brings a great offense led by a dual-threat quarterback and a flexible offensive scheme that has challenged top-ranked defenses this season.
With a record marked by narrow losses to ranked teams, Ole Miss has proven they can hang with the best.
If the Rebels can maintain consistency on defense, they may surprise a few of the higher seeds.
The team’s aggressive style of play is well-suited for the playoffs, especially in matchups where they can control the tempo.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (+3200)
Notre Dame has quietly put together a solid season, benefiting from wins over Texas A&M and a few other ranked teams.
Their offense has shown times of explosiveness, while the defense has consistently kept opponents in check.
Although they’re not a favorite to win it all, the Fighting Irish’s steady performance across the board makes them a tough opponent in single-elimination games.
With their experience and strong coaching, Notre Dame could make a surprising run if they secure a playoff spot.
Indiana Hoosiers (+3400)
Indiana is one of the surprises this season, remaining undefeated and claiming wins against mid-tier but respectable teams.
While they haven’t faced the top programs yet, Indiana’s disciplined play and an opportunistic defense make them a team to watch.
They have an outside shot to make the playoffs if they continue their streak and play well in the conference championship game.
Betting on Indiana is a high-risk, high-reward move!
LSU Tigers (+4300)
LSU has shown glimpses of potential throughout the season, though they have struggled with consistency.
With notable wins over Ole Miss and other mid-ranked teams, LSU has proven that they can pull off big wins.
They’ll need to step up defensively to compete in the playoffs, but their offensive line and quarterback play could give them an edge in matchups against high-scoring teams.
If they can maintain momentum, LSU might just surprise with a playoff spot and possibly a deep run.
Clemson Tigers (+5200)
Clemson has faced ups and downs this NCAAF season, but with a core of talented players and strong coaching, they remain a challenging opponent.
Clemson’s defense has shown flashes of excellence, and if they can secure a few key wins down the stretch, a playoff spot isn’t out of reach.
With their defensive line and experience in playoff situations, Clemson can pull off an upset against less experienced teams.
SMU Mustangs (+6600)
SMU has quietly built a strong season with a mix of solid wins over mid-ranked teams.
With an aggressive offensive approach and a defense that has improved week by week, SMU could be one of the surprise teams to secure a playoff spot.
While they have an uphill battle against higher-ranked teams, their offense could be a wildcard in an unexpected playoff run.
Conclusion of the National Championship Betting on Possible Darkhorses
With so many teams in the playoff hunt, this season’s College Football Playoffs should be a fun one.
While the favorites continue to hold the spotlight, the teams discussed here provide a true darkhorse feel as we come to the end of the season.

2020 National Championship Odds – Dark Horses Analysis
Previous Betting News
With the Clemson Tigers capping off their 2018 campaign with an emphatic 41-16 blowout win over the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on Monday night, underdogs and dark horse 2020 national title hopefuls everywhere will have some belief that they too, can rise up and make their own push to challenge for next season’s national championship.
Thanks to this insightful look at a quartet of dark horse national championship hopefuls, you’ll get the insight you’ll need in order to make a potentially bankroll-boosting NCAAF Futures Odds wager on the odds to win the 2020 national championship.
2020 National Championship Odds – Dark Horses Analysis
Wisconsin
2020 National Championship Odds: (50-1)
Despite being expected to challenge for this season’s national championship, Wisconsin fell completely apart by going 8-5 and just 5-4 in Big Ten play. The good news is that the Badgers return seven starters on offense and seven on defense. The bad news is that Wisconsin loses three starting offensive linemen and a trio of key linebackers.
The good news is that superstar sophomore running back Jonathan Taylor will be back after rushing for a whopping 4,171 yards with 29 touchdowns in his first two seasons. If quarterback Alex Hornibrook doesn’t improve in the spring, the Badgers could have a new starter under center next season. Still, I love head coach Paul Chryst and I believe the Badgers could challenge for something big next season.
LSU
2020 National Championship Odds: (50-1)
LSU went 10-3 and 5-3 in SEC play in head coached Orgeron’s second full season while capping off their campaign with a solid 40-32 win over UCF in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.
The Tigers return eight starters on offense and eight on defense, but they lose star cornerbacks, Greedy Williams, and Terrence Alexander. If quarterback Joe Burrow can perform at the level he did in the Fiesta Bowl and Orgeron can find some consistency along the offensive line, LSU could potentially challenge for the SEC title – although that seems to be the case every year.
Mississippi State
2020 National Championship Odds: (50-1)
The Bulldogs went 8-5 and 4-4 in SEC play in head coach Joe Moorhead’s first season and now, I’m thinking Mississippi State could be poised for bigger and better things in 2019 despite losing to Iowa 27-22 in the Outback Bowl and needing to identify a replacement for starting quarterback Nick Fitzgerald.
The Dogs will hand the keys to junior Keyton Thompson and they’ll need to find a combined 11 new starters on both sides of the ball. The good news is that Moorhead, the former offensive coordinator a Penn State, is one of the most respected offensive minds in all of college football.
Auburn
2020 National Championship Odds: (50-1)
The Tigers went 8-5 but just 3-5 in SEC play for polarizing head coach Gus Malzhan. Auburn returns six starters on offense and six on defense, but they’re suffering a big loss with starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham headed to the NFL draft. The Tigers have a difficult schedule that includes dates against Oregon and road matchups against Texas A&M, Florida and LSU as well as dates against both, Georgia and Alabama. Right now, I don’t see any way Auburn challenges for anything next season in what could be Malzhan’s last.
