Toronto Raptors Analysis

Since an 8-31 start to the season, the Raptors have posted a 6-2 record, with four consecutive victories, including a home win over New Orleans (113-104). After a third-quarter slump, Toronto regained control with a string of points early in the fourth.

Darko Rajakovic

“I thought that turnovers and shot selection led to problems that we had with transition defense and then scoring quite a bit,” Raptors head coach Rajakovic said of the team, watching a 16-point halftime advantage drop to one entering the fourth. “And that was exactly the message that I delivered to our guys, that we got to get back to defending at a high level, and that we need to move the ball and play for each other.”

RJ Barrett

Barrett had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists in the win. He’s averaging career highs of 22.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists through 38 games this season and has already set a new single-season career high with 220 total assists (217 – 2020-21). Barrett is.506 (82-162) from the field in the month of January – has shot better than .500 six times in 11 games.

Top Players

Poeltl recorded 21 points and 14 rebounds, while Scottie Barnes also had 21 points with 11 rebounds, marking their 15th double-double together, ranking third in Raptors history. Barnes added three offensive rebounds and three steals, achieving this feat for the 21st time in his career, surpassing Vince Carter for the most instances of three offensive rebounds and three steals in Raptors history.

Scottie Barnes

Barnes is one of the NBA’s best defenders, and a return to health has really changed Toronto’s fortunes. Toronto limited the Pelicans to hitting just 21.4 percent of their three-pointers, as they shot 43.9 percent overall from the field.

Chris Boucher

Boucher scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds off the bench, marking his third consecutive game in double figures with an average of 18.0 points. He has made 25 three-pointers in January, shooting .532 from three-point range this month.

The team last won four straight from Feb. 12-25, 2023, a run that also included a home victory over the Pelicans. Rajakovic said the defensive uptick is a result of improved effort.

“I’m coaching for 28, 29 years, and still did not find a defensive scheme where four players play defense and one is not giving great effort, and that defense works. That was happening to us quite a bit early in the season, that three guys, four guys doing what they’re supposed to do, and one player might be late half of a second or does not follow the game plan, and that creates a lot of breakdowns. Right now, we have all the guys locked in.”

Washington Wizards Analysis

The Wizards suffered their 14th consecutive loss, falling 130-108 in Dallas, where they trailed 42-16 after the first quarter. Klay Thompson scored 21 of his 23 points in that period, hitting seven 3-pointers and matching a Dallas record. The Mavericks led 73-43 at halftime, marking the Wizards’ biggest first-half points allowed this season.

Jordan Poole

Washington leading scorer Poole (21.2 PPG) Poole totaled 15 points on 6-for-15 shooting along with six rebounds and six assists. He’s averaging 19.5 points per game over his last 10 appearances, despite shooting 39 percent from the floor in that span. Poole is shooting a career-best .401 from three-point range this season and has topped 20-plus points in 11 of his last 17 games played (since Dec. 15), averaging 22.4 points over that span.

Bilal Coulibaly

Second-year player Coulibaly had 16 points, five assists and four rebounds. Coulibaly hasn’t reached the 20-point mark since his 20-point game against the Hornets on Dec. 26 but is playing fairly well by averaging 12.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.8 blocks per game over the past nine. Coulibaly is one of only three second-year players to amass 100+ steals and 80+ blocks since entering the league in 2023-24.

Alex Sarr

Center Sarr, the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft, exited Monday’s game early due to left ankle soreness and may miss additional time. He was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for December, averaging 1.6 blocks per game—ranking second among rookies. Jonas Valanciunas and Anthony Gill may share center duties in his absence.

Bub Carrington

Carrington leads all rookies in minutes (29.8) per game this season, also ranking second in assists (3.8). His 20 games this season with multiple three-pointers made rank as the second-most among NBA rookies. Carrington leads all rookies with 11 games with at least 5+ assists on one-or-fewer turnovers. He has three 15/5/5 games (pts/rebs/asts) this season, the most among all NBA rookies.

The Rookies

Bub Carrington, Sarr, and Kyshawn George are Wizards rookies averaging over 25.0 minutes per game, marking the first instance since 2021-22 that three rookies from a team achieve this. With 3,405 total minutes, they lead the league in rookie playing time this season.

Kyle Kuzma

There is talk of a possible trade of starting forward Kuzma from the Wizards, who is going through his worst season since entering the NBA in 2017, averaging 14.3 points and 2.6 assists per game. Injuries have weighed heavily on his performance; he missed five games at the start of the season with a groin strain and a full month with sprained rib cartilage, only recently regaining his rhythm.
