Online Casino 101: The Dos and Don’ts of Craps

Of all the table games in an online casino, craps moves the fastest. Even at a quick blackjack table, you won’t get more than a hand per minute. However, craps tables feature as many as 100 decisions each hour. Because you’re likely to have more than one bet going at once, you’ll probably need a bigger bankroll with craps than you will for other table games. Knowing how to handle the many betting options – as well as table etiquette – is key for doing well at this game.

Tips For Playing Online Craps – Dos and Don’ts

Do place your Pass and Don’t Pass bets with the come-out roll, which is the initial roll of the dice. You put chips on the Pass line if you’re betting with the shooter or on the Don’t Pass line if you’re betting against him. After this bet, the shooter throws the dice toward the other wall of the table. If the roll turns up 7 or 11, Pass bettors win, and Don’t Pass bettors lose. If it’s a 2, 3 or 12, Pass bets lose. Don’t Pass bets win on 2 or 3, but not 12 – that’s a push for Don’t Pass bettors. Any other number from the dice is now the “point.” If the shooter rolls that point number again before hitting another 7, Don’t Pass bets lose and Pass bets win. If the 7 comes up ahead of the point number, Don’t Pass bets win and Pass bets lose. This is when the dice go to a new shooter as well.

Don’t wait for a new shooter to place a “field” bet. These are bets that are resolved after just one roll, choosing 1 of 7 numbers to come from the next roll. Just put your chips on the number that you want to choose. You can also tell the dealer what you want if you elect to bet hard ways or propositions before any roll.

Do stick with the bets that offer the house the lowest advantage. The Pass and Don’t Pass bets bring the best results, particularly when the casino offers free odds. Most players put their money on the Pass line because it’s fun to root with the shooter. If you’ve missed the come-out, choose the Come or Don’t Come bets, which work the same way as the Pass/Don’t Pass bet.

Don’t get confused by the other bets that are available for you to choose from. For example, the hard way bets involve for numbers: 4, 6, 8 and 10. A hard way happens when both dice show the same number (a hard 8 is two 4s). If you put money down on a hard way wager, the number you choose has to show up hard before a 7, or before that number comes up any other way. For example, if you bet for a hard 6, you need two 3s before you see a 7 or even a 4-2 combo that adds up to 6. Proposition bets allow you to wager on such things as a craps on the next roll. The problem is that the house advantages are immense on these one-time proposition bets, which means that it’s wisest to stay away from them. Even the field, which appears to offer a lot of different winning options (3, 4, 9, 10 or 11, with 2-1 returns on a 2 or 12), offers the house a 5.6 percent edge. Some casinos bump the 12 payout to 3-1, reducing their advantage to 2.7 percent.

Don’t hand the dealer money or chips directly. If you need change, put cash down before the dealer gives the shooter the dice, and ask for change. Once your bet is in place, don’t put your hands down in the table area, because you definitely don’t want to interfere with a roll by having the dice hit your hands. There are few ways to become unpopular as quickly as that.
